Help with pto boot grrrrr

Only way I se possible is to slide the small end onto flat part of shaft and lock the clamp then stretch the big end toward the pto till it falls into the groove and clamp it. I have a feeling it may pull the short end off the flat part though. The shaft is all the way in the new(no old bumper stuck in it) pto.

If the rubber is degraded & dried out they can stretch & be loose If they are in that condition, I would replace it, or give it a try as it is. Worse case, if the boot fails & you have a mess of grease scattered inside the hull. But, you have to remove your pump again to replace it.

Ahhhhh the pic helps, so it's not supposed to go on the flat part of the shaft then. I thought it was. Thanks! Boot is new btw.
