Help me pick a ski - x4 vs xpl

I love my ski, but when I first started riding it I noticed that it was very tippy. My brother actually flipped it doing a U-turn at idle. Just takes some getting used to. It does very well in chop especially if the VTS is working

Yip, i've only fallen off (at idle) one time on a ski, and it was the XPL, I had shut the engine off 6 feet from the dock and was coasting up, leaned over to grab the dock pole and SPLASH, quite embarrassing (and cold) to fall off while at the dock with 6-7 people standing around.

The story with the modded ski I am looking at is that a seadoo tech owned and "built" the ski. He then gave it to a friend of his that he owed money to, the friend decided he did not want a ski and sold it to the current owner who rode it 2 times and wants it for a bigger/faster ski. The current owner has no clue what's in there or what parts are used. He doesn't even know if the gauges are in working order.......I may be passing on this one.

So I got some more pics and it looks like it has a rossier pipe, novi carbs, tdr waterbox, umi sttering setup and twist sponsons.

Not sure whats in there as far as ride plate or prop.

What do you think? goo buy for 1600-1700?

I paid like $400 for my novi carbs, Rossier pipe is $150-$300 depending on how bad the person wants to sell. Umi steering is also around $300. A motor that has good compression goes for $700 and up, more if it's been recently rebuilt. Have the raves been rebuilt with OEM parts? That costs $500 as well (just valves and housings). I bet the ski has a water injection system too, maybe some electric mods to increase rev limit? That's worth $$. You can slide underneath the ski and check out the ride plate/impeller. If the ride plate has anything other than just two straight slats, it's aftermarket. If the impeller is of a swirl design and not straight blades, it's too aftermarket. What about the nozzle? Is it black (stock) or aluminum? This sounds like a gold mine.

sounds like a decent limited pump gas setup. you will need to make sure the rev limiter has been raised to use that pipe. if they spent money for novi carbs, then chances are the rev limiter has been raised. pull that tdr waterbox out and re-install a stock waterbox. 16/23 swirl impeller, and 85/88 nozzles and you are good to go with that ski. $1500 is a great deal.

racerxxx. I went back and was reading this and I noticed that you said to do the 20-30 min water test, but then you said make sure it starts right away after riding..
If it didn't, but still started after about 10 sec, what does that indicate? Flooding?

Basically check for hot restarts was all. Probably should have added to wait about 5 minutes or so.

Gotcha. But if it doesn't crank over right away after 5 min, where it takes about a 5 second crank before it starts, what would that indicate? Asking bc it happens on my spx from time to time.. Like when I do like a 30 min ride straight then come back to shore, I'll go to restart and it'll take a little bit sometimes, but then when it fires up, runs like s champ as usual..

Needle and seat could be leaking. Pop off test would answer that, if the Pop off doesn't hold it will drip gas making it hard to start hot.

It would also indicate a worn rotary valve cover. When the clearance is too wide there, the cylinder can suck air from the neighboring cylinder. Happened on my GTI when I installed the wrong 0-ring there. Would just about drain the battery dry trying to restart after you've put your trailer in the water.
