HELP! electrical problems!

Hey All,
I've got a 1996 SPI which blows the 5 amp fuse every time! Someone told me its a Motorola diode which does not like jumpstarts!?
I also have a 1997 Seadoo GTS? IT says GTS all over but, I can find anything listed under GTS... It doesnt blow fuses even when I jump it, but the starter is constantly engaged????? And it has no spark?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

The problem with your 97GTS is probably the starter itself, it's not an easy job to replace the starter, either rebuild the starter you have, buy and OEM (high dollar), or buy a replacement, I bought one from Overtons last year seems to be O.K. Before you replace the starter you should check the condition of the battery, have it load tested. Battery cables, other electrical connections.

Your MPEM is located in the grey box, secured into a floor shoe. Pull the lever back to release the catch, lift up and pull back. You may need to remove your battery to get the box up onto the magnito houseing where you can open it. The MR2535L diode is next to the 5amp fuse on the circuit board. The board is in electrical potting, and you would need to dig carefully if you intend to replace the diode yourself.

Your solenoid (starter-relay) is located in your rear E-box by the battery. It may be stuck from internal corrosion, from water in the E-box.

cool... got the box out but before, even with the starter engaged, I have absolutly no spark! any ideas? all the fuses are good. i ran a continuity test on the starter switch itself. looks good! P.S. its the 97'...

do you have power to your coil? are the pins on top of the black electrical box ok? are the pins on the flywheel housing ok?

I pulled the plug wires from the coil and cut them back a bit. It fired right up but i pulled the lanyard and the starter kept running. The flywheel wasn't engaged but the starter motor kept running none the less. I guess I'll pull it out and give it a look see!
Also, is there a water hook up for a garden hose for the cooling system?

There are two hoses that are connected to head at the rear of the engine, the one on the starboard (rt. side) of the motor. Remove the hose and connect your garden hose here. There is an arrow showing it as the outlet of the engine, but what you are actually doing is backflushing the engine. I made my own hose by cutting off an old garden hose, and pushing 1/2" radiator hose inside the 3/4" garden hose.

One word of caution, start the ski first, then turn on the water. You can hydroloc the engine by turning on the water first. Try not to run the motor more than 2 mins. at a time.

both batteries are dead. Jumped it with a 2 amp trickle but still kept running. Pulled theF*^#%! starter this morning but I'm really not sure how to bench test? I do know when you give it the juice, it spins!!

Pulled that F#^*$! starter this morning! I hooked up a 2 amp trickle and it spins and engages but I'm not real clear on how to bench test it?
it? Also, will the starter from the 96SPI interchange?

it sounds to me like the starter solenoid is sticking in, or being exceited. I am away from my ski at the moment but on the starter solenoid (in the black box) there should be two thick wires and a multi plug. i would remove the multi plug, this should stop the starter button working and there fore the starter turning. if it still turns then you know the solenoid is at fault/ stuck in. let us know what happens, and i can try and work through it from what you tell me.

Wellllllll..............

Hate to say it, buy you just described both problems you get when you jumpstart an SeaDoo.

1) Blow the main diode, and pops the 5a fuse until you fix it.

2) The MPEM spins the starter as soon as you put power on it.


Fixes:

1) Replace diode

2) Replace power transistor


Neither of them are an easy fix, since you have to cut away all the potting material from the MPEM without damaging more.

Hey Jason,
I pulled the multiplug and re-installed the starter. Once I pulled the plug, the starter did not spin and it beeped twice??

ok this is unfortunatly sounding like what DR honda posted. but does the starter immediatly start to spin if you connect the multi plug?

ok this unfortunatly means that it is the mpem telling the solenoid to engage. I have never personaly replaced these compents on a ski but diodes and transistors are readily available. i would imagine this is something Dr honda has done before and could recommend where is a good place to source them. the actuall replacing should not be very hard, it will just be a case of very gently removing the potting compund.

You can buy MR2535L diodes from OEM parts, inc. in Colorado 4 for about $20. 719-635-0771

Minnetonka (Nick) also has Starter relay/solenoids fairly cheap.

Hey Bill, after much trial and error... I'm going to need a couple of, MPEMs. truthfully I really dont know what that even stands for!!!
Might you know a (Cheap), source where I might aquire a few????
