Working on putting on a new head gasket. Repair manual says to turn engine to find TDC on cyl 3, it does not say how to turn the engine tho. I have read a few posts that say to do this from PTO. Is this correct for the 4tec as well? If so a little guidance please... Take off PTO cover and turn what, with which tool?

If not where/how?

At this point I have Intake manifold, and head cover off and plugs out.

Also the stem on my dial indicator is not long enough to reach down into the plug holes. Any solutions besides spending money...

OK, update...
I am able to turn the engine a bit (maybe 10 degrees) by sticking the propeller on the shaft and turning the prop. Should it turn easily from here? There is a bit of rust on some of the valve springs and a few head bolts. So some moisture got in somehow??? It ran fine when I noticed the oil/coolant in hull. Has been sitting for 3-4 months since. I sprayed wd40 into the plugs holes. What next?

got it to turn, it is hard but it turned. Took a piece of stiff wire and threaded it into my dial guage, found TDC and locked the crank.

Moving on.

Still would like to know y'alls thoughts on the rust in the head please.

Please take a look at the picts

Got the head off, pretty excited!

Top of block, clean with solvent and toothbrush, maybe 1500 is my plan...

Please let me know if I am on the wrong path. Dont want to mess this up!!!

Flip flops are standard wear for us TX and FL guys. I wear them all year, and even when I work on stuff.

The rust is not good, but probably won't hurt anything. You have had moisture in there for a long time. What does the oil look like? You can get that kind of rust simply by riding short hops without letting the engine really warm up to bake it out, combined with leaving skis outside.

Keep in mind any metal surface that is rusted is no longer smooth and is actually is pitted so if anything is wearing against it like the rocker arms the wear between them will be greatly accelerated.

thanks buddy! the rust did not extend into wear areas, many just the valve springs and exposed parts of the rocker arm shaft.

Leaving skis outside in 100% humidity... that would be me. Any preventative measures I could take knowing they live outside???

Got everything bolted back together and she popped off on the trailer. Next have to run in the water tomorrow. Thank you to all for the wisdom!!
