Ive got a custom built fiberglass john boat with a 717. Back in September, I sucked some kind of string up into my pump. It wrapped around the drive shaft and got in the seal between the hull and the shaft. It caused the seal to melt and stick to the drive shaft. I didn't even realize when it happened so when I cranked up to move to a new spot, it tore everything around the drive shaft up.

Question I have is did it do to much damage to repair. I don't know what the hole in the bulkhead looked like before I damaged it so know I don't know if the bulkhead is damaged. Make sense? What I need is a picture of a bulkhead without the rubber boot on it. Ive looked online and cant find what im needing. Any help out there?

bh.jpgif you're thinking of what im thinking of, it looks like this... (This is without the boot/bellows pressed against the thru-hull fitting)

damage

Not my hull but the damage looks identical. Im asking about the area where the shaft goes through the bulkhead.

yea, you can go onto SBT's website or a few guys on here and they can set you up with a new thru hull fitting, and I think there are even threads on here about people who have had to repair that area. You're definitely not the first, or the last to do this. there is some sort of adhesive needed, and I think some people even may re-glass around the fitting where the driveshaft tore up.
I saw a thread recently on replacing this. I look for it and post

Guys I also just noticed that what is left of the carbon seal will not rotate on the driveshaft. That's not right is it. Maybe it locked down and that caused the problem.

The new through hull fitting will fix your damaged area with a little work posspx stated. I think there is a write up on this forum with pictures on doing it. I'll see what I can find

You know what, I don't know enough about seadoos to know whether I have a carrier bearing or a carbon seal. After looking at it, I think I have a carrier bearing. Does the thru hull fitting have any sort of seal or is it just a spot to clamp the hose to?

yes, it is adhered/epoxied (?) to the actual hull from the factory, then your driveshaft slides thru it. That thru hull fitting is NOT supposed to spin with the driveshaft.

By looking at the picture I posted above, do I have a carbon seal or carrier bearing. Either way it wont rotate on the drive shaft. Whats the deal with that? It should rotate right? or in other words, the driveshaft should spin freely inside of the carbon seal/carrier bearing.

Why not take the opportunity to switch to the carbon ring? It's maintence free.

Saber-I am needing to replace the carrier seal on my XP but you mention switching to the carbon ring. I would need to replace the drive shaft since the shaft has the grove to hold the C clip, right?

Is it so difficult to take 10 extra seconds to move that grease gun 5 inches backward to the carrier bearing after you lubed up that pto? I would rather have the carrier bearing if it was new. less chance for cavitation.

This boat takes some serious abuse. I use if for hunting and fishing a river. Would the carrier bearing not be better than the carbon seal?

Ok. . im not changing to a carbon ring system. Im gonna keep this repair as simple as I can. Thanks for the input though.
