Hello, I have a 2007 GTX. I've determined that I need to replace the start stop button. It takes several attempts for the machine to start when I press the button. I've purchased a new button but I need help with removing the old one and installing the new one. Thanks!

It's probably not the button but the solenoid. Listen and feel the solenoid when you press the button for a slight click. If it takes multiple presses and just starts, you need a new solenoid.

Also, a solenoid is hard to diagnose because of you hear a click, it is closing that connection and pretends it's okay. It bridges the terminal and gives continuity on an ohm meter, however it has been my experience that while it may pass voltage, it might not pass enough current. That happened in my dad's mercruiser once. The only thing that suggested the solenoid wasn't giving enough current was a slight voltage drop on the activated pole with the starter disconnected (like .1V or something).

I agree with the other two above...it's you're solenoid, not the switch. I had the exact same symptom on my 2007 GTX Wake. Replaced the solenoid and the symptom went away. Now...since you asked...I am also in progress of replacing my entire steering column harness which includes the start stop switch because my DESS post is going out. Not the same machine...I have two of the exact same models.

Anyhow...in order to just replace the switch you have a couple choices...one is wrong, but could potentially work. The other is right. Your choice.

1. Cut the wires and solder in the new one. Heat shrink to cover the soldered joint. It absolutely has to be soldered and it absolutely has to be water tight. This is not the preferred method but it is the easiest and is tempting. I'm a really good solderer...IPC certified. I am not going this route.

2. The next method would be to disconnect the plug underneath your front storage bin. Remove that bin and follow the wire harness down the steering column you'll find two connectors. One is two wire and the other is six wire. I'm pretty sure the start button control one wire in each connector...but I might be wrong about that. You'll have to disassemble the wire connectors and pull the female pins out in order to put the new switches female connectors back into that connector. Imma go post a crappy youtube on this process...I just went through it last night. I'll come back and post a link in a bit.

Now...the steering column also has to be disassembled in order to gain access to the wire harness. It's a PITA, but once you get it apart you'll see how easy it could be. Start with a 5.5 mm socket to remove the bottom three screws. That took a while to figure out. The 6 mm was too big and the 5 was too small. Went to the tool store and found they actually make a 5.5. Whodathunk? The next challenge is getting the top and bottom pieces by the two handle ends to snap apart. You'll think you're going to break them...do not break them but they will come apart. They just snap together. It helps to remove the Phillips screw on the plastic pieces on top of the handles...on the left it's you're housing for the start/stop switch which has to come off anyhow. Be careful when you pull the pieces apart, but it will require some muscle and elbow grease.

Starter Solenoid. It's a relay switch to use low average wires in your start button to control the high amperage wires to your starter. Goes between the start/stop switch and the starter.
