GTX DI died on water

I purchased a 2001 GTX DI a few weeks ago. Had it out for a 10 minute test run last week and ran flawlessly. Had to out again today and after about 30 minutes the engine instantly came to a stop. The engine will crank but won't turn over. There's a grinding sound while it tries to turn over until the maint light comes on and it quits trying. I'm guessing the motor is gone. Probably threw a rod or something. Is there any chance this could be something that I could work on or is this going to be in the shop for a rebuild or new engine? I do all the work on my seadoos but engine work is where I'll draw the line. There's only 130 hours on the seadoo. Thanks in advance.

Not wide open. My friend was on it and I was on my rxt so I can't say exactly but we were doing about 45mph so probably 1/2 or 2/3 throttle

It doesn't sound good,,, But I'd do a compression test to see if there is a obvious clue as to what the issue is.

I'm not really seasoned with these but, had a kawasaki do this to me. Sounds like something leaned out causing a ring to seize. My experience was a bad intake gasket at wot. Destroyed engine at 6000 rpm. If you pull head you will get a good look at pistons. You will know if it's seized. I would wait for lou, racer, adam, or Tonka ' s opinion first

Engine work is where I'll call it quits and let a dealer do it. Unless someone in the Cleveland area that knows what they're doing wants to lend a helping hand.

I am pretty well stocked on yuengling and miller lite if that encourages anyone ;)

Are you sure the grinding noise is coming from the engine and not the starter? Might get a mirror and look down at the starter and see if it came loose.

If it is the engine, they are not that hard to exchange. You can pull your engine and send it to SBT for an exchange and be running in just a few days. Also if it is the engine and you decide to do an exchange, you need to find out why it happened otherwise it will just grenade again.

If it's the starter would it die on the water? Coincidentally the negative battery cable came loose at the same time. Perhaps the negative came loose and the starter let go around the same time

And can someone advise me on how to check the starter. It's awfully cramped in there

And how hard is it to properly align a new engine?

Just use and alignment tool. You can purchase one, or several members have one that they would probably let you rent/use.
Super easy with an alignment tool. I personally do not have one because there is a guy where I live that flips skis for a living and I just use his.

Is there someone who wouldn't mind letting me email them a video of what it's doing?

You might want to remove the pump & drive shaft. Pull the plugs & see if you can rotate the engine by hand from the PTO. You'll know something pretty quickly I am guessing.

Bad starter will not cause an engine to "die" while running.

As noted, requires an alignment tool. It is pretty important to do. If not, you will wipe out things such as drive shafts, pumps, wear rings, carbon seals and shaft bearings. I have one for rent if you can't get something local.

I would try to reach down to see if it is loose first. As far as checking it goes, easiest way is to jump the solenoid with a screw driver or plyers.

Not what I was saying.
Airjordan613 stated in post #1 that the engine was making a grinding noise while attempting to start. I was thinking to start there and work backwards with the diagnosis. I was not saying that would cause the engine to suddenly stop. Sorry for any confusion.

Also not what I was saying. Read post #9. I wasn't quoting you. I was answering a question.

It's all good. Hopefully the engine is not toast and airjordan613 can get it going.

68ragtop is checking out a video clip for me and we'll see what he thinks. It sounds like he's very familiar with the DI motors.

I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow. What are the typical costs I should expect for complete engine replacement? Or at least a new lower end?

Quoted $4000 for a new brp short block installed. 15% discount if I wait until winter. That's more than I paid for it.

That simply won't work. And I got less than an hour of run time out of the ski.

Not sure if anyone is following this anymore but I'm doing the SES swap and I already pulled the fuel rail and injectors and some other electrical connections. Next is exhaust pipe. I'm following the SBT online instructions
