Yes, you pressurize the RV cavity to around 5psi. Pull one of the spark plugs. If pressure drops, that seal is leaking. Repeat to test other seal

If the inner crank seals are leaking, the pressure will go down with or without the plugs in.

Ok does anyone know what color to get to match the silver motors? Also when I tore apart both motors, I did find out that they both are stock, have not been bored over at all but a piston from one motor will only go in the other motors jug an in ch or so and then gets hung up....
I can't tell you what it was in originally, but a stock 717 is the same motor no matter where it came from. Only differences are color, carb setups, or placement of the pulse nipple for the fuel pump.

Moeller Honda oyster silver is a match.

Are you sure you have the arrow on the piston pointing towards the exhaust?

Also don’t use rings from one cylinder on another as they wear to that cylinder.

Yeah I’m positive I had it pointed towards the exhaust. Also I do plan on installing new rings in it, one was seized in the groove pretty good and broke..

Well I do have a 20 ton shop press I was thinking about trying to utilize that to press out that part through the crankshaft journal. Anyway I ended up picking up another 717, one thing I’m not quite sure of is this one is a silver in color and the motor number that’s on the play is m5422122. Can anybody shed some light as to what this motor came out of?

I am not sure of what the numbers actually mean, but when looking into parts for my 717 I have noticed that they can come off a bunch of different models and years. For instance: I just purchased a magneto cover from a 96 GSX that is purple but was a direct bolt onto my 95XP's 717 which is white.

Hows the new motor looking? did you find something you are gonna swap in or something your gonna take parts off of?

just to clarify these are the pistons and rings that came in the motor? You have not bought new ones yet? Its quite possible the ring(s) are not as true as they once were. This could also end with the same problem as having them in backward and would need to be replaced.

What do the cylinder walls look like? Can you still see the cross-hatching?

Well I think I’m gonna just use different parts from each motor and build a good one. As far as the pistobs go, I tried to put them in the jugs without the rings even on them and that’s when they won’t go in. Is it possible that the jugs and or pistons are wore to the point that they are more oblong and not round? I haven’t put a dial indicator on it yet.

I imagine that it is possible, but I've never seen a piston warped that hadn't already thrown a rod/bearing.

I know you previously mentioned that the jugs were not overbore. However, unless there is rust involved this seems like the most likely cause of the pistons not fitting from one to the other.

I'd suggest double checking the bore with a caliper just to be sure. Outside of that, I stumped.
