2000 GTX I rebuilt both carbs today and checked pop off pressure. First carb was right in spec at 24psi. Second one was popping off consistently at 13psi. I started to get worried. I put in the old spring which was the same size and color and wouldn't you know it, the pop off pressure was now consistently 24psi. Anyone have this happen to them?

Yep, highly possible. Plenty of kits out there for different machines (but same carb model). Most likely you got the wrong ones in the kit.

I always say, do NOT replace the springs if yours are good. They are consistently off even when new or OEM.

Wow that's weird. It's a genuine mikuni kit and both kits said they had the 95 spring and looked exactly like the original. 1 popped off at 24psi the other at 13psi

Good job. This is why you should confirm pop-off, good thing you did.

I avoid replacing carb parts that don't need replacement for this reason, most of the time carbs stop working correctly b/c they're clogged and/or corroded internally. And I inspect everything closely using a magnifying glass still occasionally miss things.

Other types of carb that doesn't work properly are those that have been monkeyed with and have some wrong or inferior parts, or came from another application thus have a different calibration.

Just a small nick in the wire of the spring can cause it to have less tension, maybe with close examination you can discover the problem.

FWIW I'm currently running 80 gram black springs in my SBN46i's as a test, they work fine. I do still have the originals and intend on reinstalling them next time the carbs come off.

I have a habit of keeping any original parts for a lengthy period, occasionally they come in handy if not for anything but reference.
