Gas Mileage/Hours per gallon

Since we recently have been discussing oil, oil costs, etc. I would like to throw gas into the equation as well. I would like to know typical fuel usage for the different engines and carb/fuel injection combinations. I think this is good information to help make a good fit for your needs when purchasing a new/used ski.

I would like to list it out similar to this:

  • 717/720 Carb - XX gal. p/hour
  • 787/780 Carb - XX gal. p/hour
  • 947/951 Carb - XX gal. p/hour
  • 947/951 RFI - XX gal. p/hour
  • 4-Tec's to be included as well
  • etc.

We can go with WOT (wide open throttle) as this is generally how most of us usually like to ride :reddevil:

These should be "typical" results as variations will occur depending on carb adjustments, hull, etc...

If you have input to add, please do. This will help me figure this out sooner. Perhaps there are some threads out there with info already, I have yet to search. I just wanted to get this thread started and will add to it as I get info. I figure there should be some good info on the BRP seadoo site as well (hopefully).

Thanks.

I like what you are trying to do, but I don't think there is a way to really get accurate results for this. There are WAY too many variations.

Rider weight, Model of Ski, Stock vs Modded, Type of Fuel, etc, etc.

On top of that, since there isn't a fuel flow meter/gauge any results/replys you get will be completely inaccurate. It's kind of like those "My ski doesn't have a speedo and I don't have GPS, but I can tell I gained atleast 10MPH by adding that intake grate" Type of thing..

GroupK has some information about fuel consumption on their webpage, they actually installed a fuel flow meter to get this info.

Here's the information for a Stock '97 GSX (787):

PEAK SPEED: 55 MPH
RPM: 6780
Fuel consumption @ peak speed: 44.0 lph
Fuel Consumption @ 50mph: 39.5 lph

Well, I don't expect to get extremely accurate results. As I said as well, it will vary based on many reasons. But, I think results could be around (+/-) 1 gallons per hour.

And, I am not looking for answers like, was at lake this weekend and got 5 hours on half tank... I am actually looking for results much like you just posted, test data from reliable sources, not your average "Joe Seadoo'er".

I know Seadoo has this info on there site for the new ski's and I was hoping they would have archives with valid fuel data for models dating back into the 90's. I just need to look for it.

Thanks for the post

Fuel

Boats are rated GPH not HPG...

My 26' Chris Craft burns almost 60 GPH WOT... (460) (has a 70 gallon fuel tank)

Normal day I burn $50 to $100 in fuel...

As for the skis... the 951 engine burns 15 GPH at WOT. It's in the manual... not the shop manual, but the normal one. there's also a web site w/a huge list I found a few days ago:

I'll search for it and post if i find it... he had every model and its fuel consumption listed in a chart.

There is a source out there and he is very reliable. However, he has had problems on this board before and I dont think they allow links to the site. If you are interested PM me and ill send it to ya.

Caution this information is harmful to your bank account!

I can give you the info on the 787 when installed in the 16.5' Speedster

Out of my manual: 1998 Speedster

24.4 US Gallons Per Hour :puke:

So that would be 12.2 GPH p/motor at WOT

It also states my cruising time at WOT 1hr 25min. Leaving you 15 min (reserve) in tank!

Good to know! I never went looking for that info. Scary as hell too, explains why i'm broke as hell all summer!

I have found lots of good info today now that I searched. RFoster130 was a big help. I will post results in the coming days to the top post in this thread.

@BMANN - Boats are a whole other can of worms...perhaps a thread dedicated to it in the boating forum would be nice as well. What I am seeing for the skis and a 787 carb is about 11.8 GPH. You have a bit more weight and are doubling up on the motors. That hurts the wallet!

I have also been reading that low RPMS just over the point of being fully on plain is the most fuel efficient cruise speed. I'll try to gather more info on this as well.

This would eventually make a nice sticky once the info is there.

Here is an example of what I am working on. The 4-tec are the 155Hp and 185Hp SC

I'll see what else I can come up with as far as useful charting goes other than these basic ones.

I hear ya there. These twin 110's are very thirsty. One day last summer i went through $90 in gas in about 2 hours.

My Rides

99 Speedster SK (owned since 7/02) Twin 717's (85HP). 40 gallon tank, 100 miles on a tank on mixed riding, 2.5 MPG, 100 mile range

2004 GTX PWC (Bought new 7/04) 155HP NA, 5.0 miles per gallon with mixed riding, 16 Gallon tank, 80 mile range. I have made 100 miles on a 16 gallon tank riding easy.

Don't forget the cost of oil :banghead:

It sure adds up quick to run these toys! But they sure are fun

Oil

yea a OIL GPH would be nice...

I burn 2-3 gallons per 951 engine / summer.

This summer I will take hour readings on both my ski's at the start / end of season :)

Yeah thats adds up quick. With 1 gallon of oil per tank of gas. Basically another $1.00 per gallon of gas. Comes out to be about $150 per fill up. I wish i could quit doing those WOT runs across the lake but it is very addicting.

Great Thread.

I upgraded from 93 GTX's (587) to 97 Kawi's 1100 STX's. The Kawi's have 3 carbs, so, that may me wonder, should I have gone with a 97 GTX to get better gas mileage.

The graph on this thread reveals that that 97 GTX uses about 11.85 gals per hour at WOT wherein my Kawi used about 12.2 gals per hour.

When considering that my Kawi can use a blend (oil) and SD requires full synthetic, it looks like the Kawi will cost me less to run.

That said, since I still have my 93 GTX's an can travel farther on a significantly lesser size gas tank, maybe I will keep my 93 GTX's.
