I am looking for some help removing and replacing the fuel valve on my 1998 GSX Ltd.

I took the slector knob off and the hex nut, but from there everything is corroded and I want to hear from someone who has done it before I force (and break) somthing.

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Wiggle it out, if it looks as crummy as it sounds get a new one for about 25bux, mark the hose with nail polish so you do not mix up how many dots goes to reserve/carbs line and main.

If knob & nut are removed, a lite tap, it should pop to inside. Take the basket out,
you can see it and the fuel water separator/filter. Its lower bowl unscrews so you normally dump the contents to see if water is in fuel mix. It has a 10mm nut securing to under consol, these two can be pulled toward basket opening for easier
lone replacement.

Definitely replace it. I had all kinds of problems with stalling and poor running until I swapped mine out. Don''t bother trying to clean it up.

Mine was stuck in also, and a couple light taps inward got is loose.

Thanks for all the help. The knob and nut are removed. Does the part that sticks up and that the nut goes on go down? It is all so coroded that I can't tell what part goes in.

It goes into the hull, if that is what you are asking.

Try to scrape some of the corrosion away, or maybe soak it in PB Blaster.

yours sounds pretty nasty :ack:

Check your hoses too

I had the same problem, and if you still have the grey fuel hoses that are the cause of the problem, replace them as well.

Thanks. Actually, it was so corroded that I could note see a seam indicating which part should drop in. Apparantly though my buddy (whose garage it is in now) got the thing out last night. We has doused it in penetrating oil. It was a mess.

OK. Now my question is about my starter button. It only works if I push it half way in. If I push it hard, the starter turns as I push in but when I push all the way it stops. So, I have to push it half way in.
Do you think this could potentially interupt the ignition/spark?

You should start a new thread about the start button. But since you asked...replace it too. Cheap and fairly easy to swap.

yep thread it but a quick one... it's only about $75.00 for a new start/stop "switch" sure you can find it under parts!!!

whooa no way where at buy a few and sell em to us!!!! i got mine from i think babbits oem parts list was around 75-80 buck!!! 15 cant complain!

I must be mistaken. But I am SURE I bought one for the XP, since the rubber was worn through when I got it. I seriously doubt I paid anything close to $100. I would have wrapped it in a ballloon first, as cheap as I am...:reddevil:

Yup. The red button that you push to start, and push again to stop. Flat, red rubber boot with 2 wires sticking out of it.

Anything over $20.00 is too much for any switch.

By the way, why do your messages end with "Chill out - I am just kidding around..."?

Several months ago, someone misread my post and thought I was copping an attitude. Anyone that knows me knows I don't "cop a 'tude" so I put that down there just to remind anyone, that if you even remotely think I am getting nasty, I most likely am not.

I don't like it being there, but I like to have friction with others even less, so I have left it. I may remove it, now that you bring it up.

Also, in case you don't know, I am not typing that each time I post. That is part of my signature, and automatically appears there.

What did you do? Type in CAPITALS so they thought you were YELLING?? Ha!

Right Dave, everyone was a great help. Thanks.

i think so...sometimes you know; people just get a lil but hurt for what...i dunno, i know were all men here, i think...at least most of us...to be quite honest i cant wait to get back from canada in 2 1/2 weeks to become a premium member, i really like this place, i now look forward to getting to work in the morning and checkin up on post's.it's like a bright light at the end of the tunnel! everybody i think is great, and you know were all wrong sometimes! whataya do? live and learn...and scoop, snipe seadoya, and many more have been GREAT (not yelling) help so far... i couldn'nt ask for more!! and for anyone who hasn't tried it yet, try calling your local dealership and asking some of the questions that are asked on here! i think they all practice the same script...'' i dunno, you'll have to bring it in" there goes $100 bucks...lol....should have made a thread outta this but its here and now!!!! for now i'm out...peace

No, it wasn't in all caps. I don't even remember what it was, and it didn't even get nasty, or close to it.

I just posted something humorous, and the guy thought I was serious, and I had to make 2 or 3 more posts to help him re-read it the way I meant for it to be read, so I added the signature.

I don't remember what was said, who the guy was, or anything. It just wasn't that big a deal, but I wanted to prevent a "big deal" from ever happening from misinterpretation in the future.

We are all here to have fun, joke around, and possibly...just possibly...fix a boat or ski.

Guess it is all about perception. I like the motto you have now and that is what I hope to get to this weekend - FAST, WET, FUN!
