HI guys back again, bought a 98 gtx limited, runs great, very happy with it, I have an issue with the fuel level, the guage shows full no matter the fuel level, I have seen some repair kits that mention the float loses its magnets im wondering if that might be my issue, any help appreciated thanks

I "think,,,' it shows empty when the magnets fail. I know it does if the float fails.
Someone will hop in an either clarify or help..

FAIK, for a full reading, the float needs to be up. Unplug the sender and see if the gauge reads empty.

I "jumpered" mine to make the light go off and it reads full all the time. I would see if the PO did the same

Could be a short in the board itself, the wiring to the board, or could be the last (highest) magnetic switch on the board is stuck shut.

Full fuel = approx zero ohms, Empty = max ohms is how it works.

Maybe a piece of the magnet is stuck on the highest Bar. Mine will read full until it goes under the half tank...then drops to empty.. tried swapping another with a new float... same thing.. so I just said who cares..

The OP has never returned to the thread. It could be the sender, it could be the gauge, it could be jumpered, it could be a stuck magnet, it could be a stuck float, or it could be a shorted wire.

We may never know!!

Welcome back. Did you get it fixed? Did you try any of the suggestions?

(And my post was helpful as it summarized all the suggestions) we've seen it before where someone asks for help, we take our time and experience to answer, and then nothing but crickets.

hi thanks, yes the sender was bad, on inspection, the former owner had jumpered the wires togethere, I guess to kill the buzzer and light,

You can probably fix it yourself. You will need to pull the fuel pickup out. Once out, the solution is one of the two common problems. Look at the float and see if the magnets are on it. If so, put an ohm meter across the wires. Move the float up and down and the resistance should change. If it reads open (infinity) then the fuse is bad in the pickup. The good news is that the fuse is not needed and you can jumper it.

If the float is missing the magnets or does not float in a cup of gas, order a new float.
BUT before you put it back in the tank, verify with your meter that the resistance is changing. Floats are cheap and jumpering the fuse take 10 minutes.

Report back and we'll get it working for you.

<edit> Does the fuel gauge show full with it jumpered? If not, the fuel gauge may be bad and you may want to leave well enough alone.

<edit> Duh. The title says showing full. Pull the pickup.

hi thanks man, just curious what was your MOS in the force I was a crew chief stationed at TYNDALL AFB panama city florida, got out in 1981,,i wish I had stayed for 20 a million times ,, back then we was ADWC, training pilots and working on the Sperry drones, but my last year we changed to a TAC BASE and we got a few F-15's from LANGLEY, man I loved that bird got to ride one, never experienced anything like that before or after,, made the F-4's and t-38's we had, like model A fords anyways lol
havnt had much time to work on the ski, but Im going to try and get it ready for the 4th, got a camp spot on the lake right on the water, should be a great few days, oh I got another question, on my 01 gtx DI, good running ski, but here that last couple times out, it wants to die when just idling, been searching through the forums, could it be the TPS ? I havnt hooked my scanner up to it yet, to get a week off for the 4th im working a lot of OT, anyways thanks for your experience and your time,, its good to have another wing nut to chat with,

I was a 456x2 (B-52 defensive fire control system). You obviously are a lot older than me!! HA.

Start a new thread for your DI as they are a whole different animal!!
