Fuel Pump?

Today I was ont he lake for the first time (bought it used) with my 1997 Sea Doo Speedster. After about 10 minutes the number 2 engine I noticed died. I started watching them more closesly and noticed number 2 ran about 1000 rpm's lower. It kept dying about every 5 minutes, then on the last one it just kept dying down and going up and dying down and going up, then it quit to never be started again. I'm hoping this is the fuel pump? Anyone know how hard this is to replace?

Also the oil resevoir is leaking out the bottom (where the lines connect to the plastic container.

Welllllllll.................. It could be, but it's highly unlikely.

You fuel pump(s) are part of the PTO carb on each engine, and it is a simple diaphragm pump. If it's just a fuel delivery problem, it is more likely to be a plugged up filter, or fuel select valve. But since these are 2 stroke engines... chances are (with the way you were describing it) your engine is dead.

With a 2-stroke, your fuel is transporting the oil into the engine parts. So, if it was a fuel deliver problem, and you kept running it... the engine would have been starved of oil. A good rule of thumb is... If a 2-stroke isn't running properly, shut it down.

The other thing is... if it was slowly dropping in power, it could have been overheating. Does your beeper work when you plug on your lanyard?

If it were my boat... I would start with pulling the plugs, and doing a quick compression check. 150psi is perfect, but anything over 135 will run well.

Let us know what you find.

I really really hope not. I guess that makes sense without fuel it's not getting oil, but... you think it's done for good? I'll let you know what I find.

They are almost always rebuildable... but let's not jump to conclusions. This is just one guy interpreting a post on the Internet.

Get a compression reading, and we will go from there.

I just thought it might help if I went over the details a litte more in depth. Prior to this run, both engines had been compression tested by a mechanic who was a seadoo mechanic. Both were compression tested good, though it was tested by the same dealer that sold me the boat. It ran great on the lake though when I test drove it. Both engines started up fine.

Then on the lake today the #2 engine took a little longer to start and idle, then no problem. Cruised with both engines no problem for about 10 minutes (number 1 was running about 6000 RPM's, number 2 around 5700, I just figure this is due to throttle settings, etc). Then number 2 would just quit when I brought the throttle back a bit. Restarted it and no problem. About 10 minutes later it quit. Then it kept quitting more (about 3 more times in a 5 minute period). The last time it ran, the #2 i kept the gas up and the RPM's dropped off, reved up, dropped off, and it quit never to be started again.. though i did try to quite a bit, which I hope didn't hurt.

Now, the reason I suspected fuel pump is because this is exactly how my truck acted when it's fuel pump was dying then died.

#1 runs fine (it didn't like being at a high RPM without it being on a plane, I couldn't get it to plane with one engine because we had 5 people in it. So I ran it slow all the way home)

Oh yah, and how much would it cost to rebuild just for my situational awareness.

Lastly, thanks a lot for the info!

Watching mechanic:

Compression test showed that #2 had one bad and one good cylinder. After removing the top of the engine the "cylinder is scorched." they are calling me tomorrow to let me know what they plan to do. Seems like a really good dealership, they aren't leaving me out to dry.

I didn't see what it was. I saw the needle move about half way what the others did, so I'm guessing around 60?
