99 GS. I took the rear electrical box apart and cleaned it up due to corrosion. Rebuilt the drive/propulsion systems, Got everything back together and tried to hook up the battery, I held the cable on the terminal for a few seconds while i fished for the bolt, it made sparks... not good.

I pulled the box apart and found that I hooked a ground to the battery side of the starter solenoid.... The box was full of smoke and the wires that went up to the front of the ski to a connector on the engine were hot.

The wire I hooked to power was a black wire that came in from the connector on top of the electrical box. I rerouted everything, correctly, hooked the battery up, no sparks. Put the key on, it beeped, but nothing happened when I hit the button.

I fried something good. Where do i start to trouble shoot this problem? So pissed at my self.

My guess is you smoked the MPEM. Happens when a battery is jumped from a running car, or reverseing the battery cables. If you smoked the harness, I have a '97 GS complete harnees w/rear box $100 shipped. LMK

The wires at first glance look ok, but im pretty pissed at it right now, so ill get back to it later when ive cooled down and take a better look.

Where is the MPEM located. Would a shop manual give a testing procedure on it? Ive seen a few manuals on ebay and amazon. Guess I need one.

Bad thing is I had a picture of how it was together before I took it apart, but I guess i was running on auto pilot and just stuck all of the rings together.

beeper beeps twice, fuses are ok, starter turns over when the solenoid is jumped, changed solenoids, no difference. Hit the start button, nothing happens. Should I just assume the MPEM is bad and get another, since I ran 12 volts through the ground system. Ive read there is no sure way to test the MPEM.

Can you swap MPEMs from different boats? Like a 97 GS with the 720 to the 99 GS with the 720? Or will this cause issue with the key not being recognized?

I don't think the MPEM is bad as you are getting the two beeps. Both those start solenoids may be bad, or good and the S wires got smoked. When you are jumpering/by-passing the solenoid, cranking the engine, are the *plug wires fireing? Any signal on white coil wire?

Both the solenoids are good, they both work fine on my 99 GSX.

Thank you for the lead sir, I will check that out and get back to you.

Checked the coil wire and im getting 2 volts according to my voltmeter, that pushing the start button and not pushing it, ether way its 2 volts.

What are the S wires?

Got a hold of a wiring diagram. Had the starter solenoid ground going to power. Hooked the ground back properly and the ski started right up.

Thanks bill, I feel like such a dope.
