Final question - air leak

Hey guys,

I finally got the ski running, honestly couldn't have done it so soon without this forum. I've learned a lot about the mechanics of a jet engine over the last three weeks. Thanks again everyone.

Final question here..

I've got the 951 running, pretty smooth for 2+ years of sitting, but I've got a very high out-of-water idle. Somewhere around 4.5 - 5k with and without choke. Signs pointing to an air leak at carbs, right?

Now my air box does not have the proper o-rings on the carb-to-airbox manifold, nor can I find them anywhere online. Anyone have a link or part number?

Would that even cause this type of problem, or is the leak happening before carb operations (maybe gaskets not sitting right on engine manifold)?

I have already loosened throttle cable, has plenty of room. Also backed throttle screw out where it doesn't touch throttle plate. Still happening. That's why I assume an air leak.

Since these skis don't use a real air filter... you don't have to worry about the O-ring between the carb and the airbox.

The high idle out of water is normal too. I personally wouldn't worry about it. The IN WATER idle is what you want to worry about. With that said... if it was mine... I would probably open the low needles another 1/8th turn. That will help tame the out of water idle, and not affect the in water too much.

Okay. I just redid the carb to engine gaskets and double coated with red rtv just to be sure there was no leak there. One that seals up I'll screw the lows out 1/8. Thanks.

Its fixed and running. We have life! She'll be getting a water test in a few days. Thanks!

I would get new gaskets and get that RTV out. It isn’t fuel resistant and only ThreeBond 1211 should be used.

Yep... what he said. I put base gaskets on dry... and don't worry about airbox gaskets. Fuel will eat/soften RTV. It has no place in a carb or fuel part.

Gotcha. Thanks for the input, guys.

I also ended up finding a set of airbox rings in my other airbox. Just had to wet them with oil to soften up.
