Excessive oil in Piston 2 after sitting for 4 weeks? 1996 XP

Im leaving for the river tonight and just wanted to go over everything, the 1996 XP has been sitting for 4 weeks, and a lot of oil is shooting out of rear cylinder (PTO), rear hole?

I drained it out rather quickly (I turned it over 5 times) and the oil is gone, finally got it to start?

Leak somewhere? how to fix? Is this really bad?

It's a leak in either the rotary valve seals, or center seal on the crank. Neither is easy to fix. I personally wouldn't worry about it. Once the oil is cleared, it should be fine.

Thanks Doc!

I searched on the forum and I saw you posted that before...

*** IT WORKED GREAT!! *****

Thanks to you and everybody here at seadooforums! I took it out to Lake Mead/Lake Mohave, Telephone Cove... it was awesome! what a great time we have.. videos coming up... however, I was too afraid to take it out any further.... lol... though I trust my worksmanship... umm im still a little hesitant to go and venture way deep out there in case the XP turned off, or I flew off of it...

I think I should sell it now, I know its a great ski and its been really reliable, however, Im too big for it, and I want a two seater!

:)

Don't sell it, you've got one of the best ski's seadoo ever made. These old ski's are not that expensive and I have a suggestion, keep the 97XP and get a 96 or 97GSX, it's a true two seater and it's as fast the the 96XP and more stable. Not as much fun to ride but close.

There's a picture of one on my avatar, I think it's somewhere behind Sheridan.

Here is a little video of my working XP at Lake Mead! :)

after watching the vid.. i'd suggest a GTX or at least a gsx... you need a solid 2 seater or 3 seater.

i have a friend thats your size that sold his xp for the same reason, he has a gtx now and loves it !

upside, less worries about falling off and not being able to get back on in deep water, more stable, can handle a passenger (or two) as well, and a huge fuel tank on them 15 gallons... vs 9.

downside, not nearly as maneuverable, 10-15% loss of max speed unless you get a 951 model, slower acceleration, but once you settle into it, its a dam nice ride. i have a 99 gtx in my garage (florida tho) that would be perfect ! price range min 1600-up to about 2400 depending on the engine size and condition. if you can't keep two ski's, then the xp should fetch about 1500+ so the price difference isn't significant.

I'm gonna disagree slightly with what you say. I have a 96XP and also a 96GSX, flat out they're about the same speed and acceleration. I do agree the GSX is more stable and it's a true 2 person ski while the XP is a one person ski with room for two, and I also agree that the GSX is not as much fun to ride, but it's close.

yes your right...

my bad for not clarifying, when i was saying that you'll lose take off and top end, i was thinking the GTX, not gsx, i would agree there is very little difference with the gsx, i've ridden them and they are quite nimble, may not turn on a dime, but they'll turn on a nickle :)

the gtx (i think) is a larger/longer hull than the 96 gsx by about a foot, and its also a couple of inches wider if I remember, too lazy to look up the specs. with a 787 they're not that fast, with a 951 they scoot along nicely. But essentially its a totally different ride, more like riding the yamaha wave venture/xl style hulls than riding the xp, not going to be getting any serious air there but you'll still enjoy a nice day on the water.

With a larger rider thats not 18 and a thrill seeker, the GTX limited would be a perfect fit. I think in 97 they had the gtx 787, and in 98+ they either offered both engines, or they were all the 951 versions.

But a 96xp is too small for the OP.

OK, so I can ask for $1500 or more?, to be perfectly honest, man my XP is so freaking clean inside the engine, I couldnt believe it, if you see it, youll think the previous owner never used it.. seriously... its so freaking clean it looks like it was in the factory showroom, and thats with oil leaking!

Compared to my Sportster..., so go for a 97 GSX... I was thnking of going a little crazy! selling both my 95 Sportster and my 96xp, and getting a Seadoo Challenger, or Seadoo Speedsterr, I saw one earlier on ebay too good to be be true, but brand new for $14,999 (the speedster).... is that unbelievable?

Also a 2011 New Sea Doo Challenger for $19,999.. but of course their not PWC's I still love em...

nothing against a challenger, I had a 96 (single 787 engine) and it was fun, (and cheap, a $4,000 boat not 20K)
that bugger had a small weight limit, so if I was ever to buy another jet boat it would be a bigger 7 seater, not a 4-5 seater, so to some degree unless its just hubby/wife, bigger is better.

And ya, a perfectly clean xp should fetch 1500+ on a regular basis depending on your location, they are a tad cheaper here in FL, more like 12-1500 but that's just because we have so many, and so many that are beat salt water babies. I see a 96xp for sale about 6 times a month locally, with one that is actually clean, the rest are rode hard and put to bed wet, but there are plenty of choices.

I meant a 2011 Challenger :) its a 8 passenger, a dealer is selling a brand new 2011 with 3 year warranty, and great financing, like $199 a month..

DONT FLAME ME, but I did look at the Yamaha SX190 too... lol... dont know, I like not having payments, but I could put a nice down payment if I sell my sportster and xp towards the speedster at $14.9, finance like $10, and making small payments and paying it off...

don't mind my statements about the 5 seaters, I was just rambling, but in case you end up searching for a quality used jet boat vs new, i'd recommend the larger ones vs smaller, you'll appreciate it down the line.

and if you don't like payments, then consider a good used boat 5-8K goes a long way in the used boat market. downside of course is no warranty and sometimes your buying somebody else's problems... but its half the price..

I've got 4 g's in this 69 and 2 of them are in a new engine(9hrs.). It goes 43mph, I can seal it up like a camper, take the top off or slide it front or back. This one checked all my boat boxes so I could concentrate on Seadoos.

Matt, that's really a neat boat, it looks like something out of an old James Bond movie. I'm guessing it's a straight inboard, what engine does it have in it?

Lou

Mercruiser 165 I/O. It's an old chevy truck engine with a cam and brass freeze plugs. Thanks though Lou. It's an Aristocraft 19.

all I did was make a pattern on a piece of poster board and cut it with a utility knife, no real issues. Well, i shouldn't say I did it, my buddy with a steadier hand did it while I sipped on a natty light :)
