I grabbed a 94 XP (I believe) from my neighbor for free because he was tired of messing with it..... Any ways I found that the engine was toast. (Needle bearings on the connecting rod let go and took out the case and crank) So right now I am in the market for a re-maned engine. Are there any places that you guys recommend ordering an engine from? Is SBT any good? And how do you tell the difference from a 657 and a 657x visually? Thanks for your time.

If you are handy with motors you may be able to go at this 650, be sure to pressure test along the way so you do not have air/water leaks that will make you crazy later - the 657x has different cyls and water jacketing, carb layout is sideways from most others but the basics are the same, the 787 will not go in easily and for a beginer the 650 will give a lot of fun, if you are not comfy with all the little things SBT may be the faster way to get this purring, be sure to check the fuel system carefully as abandon ones need as much or more repair work to insure steady fuel/oil delivery so the new motor does not burn up from lean running, pump oil and seals should be checked for the same reason - they spoil from sitting as much as running on empty.

Is there any markings on the block or cylinders they would say if it is a 657 or a 657x? I'm just going to buy a re-maned engine and be done with it. I just want to make sure I get the right engine. I was thinking of buying from SBT, does anyone have anythig good or bad to say about them? Thanks for your time.

pull the head off, if it has a "relief" cut in it, its a "non-X" head/motor, or look at the "tag" on mag housing, maybe its marked with 657X there, or just 657

In 94, Seadoo made two XP's...and XPI, which had the 657, and XP that had the 657X. Check your VIN# and last two digits will be the year. Believe though, you have the regular XP w/the 657X

The tag can be transplanted so look at the carb shafts, and if you pull the rotary cover you can see more of the water jacketing, once you get into the fuel system you will know how much repair work is involved - sbt web site has a lot of pictures, fullbore has a lot also.
