Engine overheat...time for rebuild?

Last season my engine got really hot and the overheat warning went off after a hose clamp came off. The paint browned mostly on the exhaust and one cylinder. Haven't tested the compression since but it ran great the next day. Have I shortened the life of the engine?

It got real sluggish as I was going up river because the hull was filling with water so I stopped and noticed smoke from a little rubber hose that goes to the top of the exhaust melting. I swam it to shore. So the alarm never went off while I was riding. Only when I put the key back on the post.

Wow, it had to get pretty hot to turn the pipe brown. You need to check all the hoses and get a zip tie on that small hose on the top of the pipe.
The only way you will know if it did damage is with a compression test.

Also you need to get rid of those grey fuel lines ASAP as they will be the death of that engine.

How are the gren fuel lines bad ?

My fuel lines on my 97 Gsi. They degrade and present this glue gooop to your fuel system and carbs. Get rid of those fuel hoses if you still have them.

My lines looked perfect on the outside FYI.

For sure replace the lines, open and rebuild the carbs using ONLY an OEM kit as aftermarket are junk, and replace the fuel selector.

If not, the green goo will cause a lean condition and your engine will eat itself.

Most people don't know it's an issue until the engine locks up.
No question if you have them replace them with standard black automotive fuel line. Yours will take about 20' of 1/4".

You also need to pull the carbs and check the internal filters for the dreaded green goo.
