Dock attendant put 20 gallons of gas in my hull instead of the tank...

Whilst on vacation, my wife and I pulled into a local marina for gas, me on my RX and she on her GTI. Both machines were about half empty so I figured it'd take around 15 gallons of fuel to fill them both. I was on one side of the pump and my wife on the other, and I couldn't really see her machine well, but I was watching the pump...I'd already topped mine off with, as expected, 8 gallons...and when the pump hit 20 gallons I was like, "Wow...the GTI was more empty than I thought...". At 29 gallons pumped I knew something was WAY wrong, so I got off my machine and climbed onto the dock, to see the attendant had put the fuel nozzle into the intake vent...NOT the fuel tank, she hadn't even removed the tank cap. I was like, "WHOA! You are not pumping into the tank, but into the HULL!!!"
Now I COULD insert some comment about having a girl do a man's job...but I won't...
So told everyone at the dock to clear out, and the girl went in to get her manager. LONG story short, I lost two days on the water with that machine while they drained and cleaned it.

They took care of it really nicely, I must admit. Hand-pumped the fuel out, wiped it down, and washed and rinsed it out with a mixture of Dawn dish-soap and water multiple times. It seemed to have suffered no ill effects, but I went ahead and filed a claim with my insurance company, just in case something happens down the road that is related to it.

Losing time on the water sucks,,,

I think they owed you a "loaner ski" for the time it took for them to clean the hull.

It could have been a LOT worse, a few too many years ago as a teenager I had a Suzuki Quadrunner 185 atv, back when a 185 was a BIG atv. It was kept on the family farm, at the time of this incident we were living 20 or so miles away in town while our new house was being built on the farm. Well one Friday night a cousin was on his way home from college with some of his buddies, and they ran out of gas a couple of miles from the farm. He apparently made the comment that his uncles place was just a couple of miles away and they could get some gas from the shed there. So they walked to the farm, climbed over the gate and walked to the shed where the ATV's and the gas cans were kept, they then picked my Quadrunner, all 3 piled on with a 6 gallon gas can and headed back to the car, in the process they cut the fence next to the gate to get out. (why they did not have the sense to cut the chain on the gate instead I will leave to your best guess, mine is alcohol). Anyway at some time around 3:15 am that Saturday morning the state police called our house to say the Quadrunner was on the side of the highwway and it was on fire, as it turns out they ran out of gas partway back to the car, the fuel tank on the quadrunner was under the seat, so they pulled the seat off and started pouring gas in, when one of them wondered if they were pouring gas into the fuel tank or the air intake horn, so out came a zippo to check......

Imagine what could have happened! Yikes. Hopefully the process at least degreased the hull a little. ;)

Anybody have a picture of that vent? Just curious what it looks like & where it is......

There is only one place on our lake that wont let you pump your own gas. If I ever have to go there I basically guide their hand the entire time. Don't trust them to not spill it, overfill, etc.

Saw an attendant filling up a guys 2000 GTX RFI once. Had the nozzle shoved in the OIL filler hole just pumping away.

Around here, you have to pump your own gas. The attendant will hand you the nozzle, and take it back when you are done. I've been told it's for liability when fuel is spilled, but these stories make me wonder what the real reason may be.

not a fuel tank cap.JPGI think what must have thrown her off some is the fact my wife had raised the front hood to get to something.
