Cylinder Installation

Things are moving quickly today, though the engine won't be dropped into the hull for a few more hours because I have another question.

My Clymer's Manual WARNS that the jugs (cylinders) must be properly aligned during installation so the cylinder head and exhaust manifold will fit squarely against the machined surfaces of the cylinders and the screws will aging.

If Clymer's is correct, is there an EZ, effective way to perform that task without purchasing the "special" Sea Doo tool?

Also, is there is substitute for Loctite 515 Gasket eliminator?

What's the 515 for? The base gaskets? If it is... as long as there is no damage to the engine cases... I just put them on dry. If there are some nicks in the cases that you want to make sure seal... use your 3-bond on it.

The reason I put them on dry, is because you may need to change them. Once you assemble the cyl, and the head... you will need to check your squash band. If it's out of spec... you will need to take the jugs off to put in a different base gasket.

The jugs should go on straight... but if you want to verify the alignment... lightly install the exhaust manifold, and then tighten a couple of the cyl bolts. Remove the manifold before torquing the cyl down.

not sure if it applies to sea doos or not but back in the day when we rebuilt sled engines one of the tricks of the day was to install the intake manifold to the jugs first, align them from the inside of the jug. It was suggested that it made a better path for the fuel therby giving more power. Who know's but when you are looking for an edge, anything will doo.
I'm thinking that the manifold will help square up the jugs.
