Convert to oil and gas mix?

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a '98 GTX Limited. Love the machine, its runs FAST! At least for the first few times I had it out! Now I have all kinds of fuel issues, poor performance, idling issues, and from doing my research here I have decided to do several things and get my ski back up to par:

1) new plugs - done
2) clean RAVE valves - in process
3) new bilge pump - in process
4) replace all the old gray fuel lines
5) new fuel filter, clean out fuel selector valve, new fuel pick up filter
6) clean out carbs
7) dump old fuel

One thing I have a question about is should I convert this system to an oil and gas mixture instead of relying on the oil pump system? I live in South Florida and have discussed this with several dealers in the area and ALL the shops guys, to a man, say to bypass the original oil pump system and go to mixing the oil in the gas. They say the pump and/or the line that feeds the oil to the motor will at some point fail and fry my motor. Any thoughts on this? Or is there a thread on this forum that discusses this? I have not been able to find it if there is.

Thank you in advance for your info and opinions. I have already learned A LOT from this forum!!

Do a search and you will see lots of posts discussing going to premix. The general consensus is the pump works great, so keep it but replace the oil lines and filter as part of general maintenance.

I wouldn't do it.
The oil pump is basically fail safe. If it ever does fail it usually goes to "full oil position" so the motor doesn't melt down.
You will also use less oil as it regulates according to RPM on how much oil it feeds the engine, anywhere from about 30-1 up to 100-1 ratio
On pre-mix you ALWAYS are using about 40 to 1 mix.

I would also change the pump oil, since you don't know when the PO did anything to it and replace the oil filter too.

They're partially correct, unless you do maintenance, ie change the oil filter and change the oil injector lines the oil system will fail. There are more reasons to keep the oil injection than to mix oil and gas.

I'm on the other side of the fence. Both of my skis were switched to premix. My reasoning is to reduce as many parts as possible. Will the pump fail?? who knows....prolly unlikely. However, with premix I never have to worry about it.

Keepin the oil pump will save you money in the long run. Just do the maintenance like change oil filter and make sure to change oil lines and check them for stiffness every year.

i just put all the oil injection back on my 96xp and my 98xpl.got tired of mixing, and i used way too much oil last summer!just my .02cents

Sorry I have not had time to respond. I've been working like crazy to get my ski back in the water. THANK YOU ALL for the great advise and comments. I chose to keep the oil injection in tact for now. Just got everything put back together on Saturday and did a quick test run on Sunday morning and it runs AWESOME!! I wound up getting the carbs rebuilt, they were pretty nasty. I pulled them out and had RIVA Motorsports in Pompano Beach do the rebuild. The old ski is screaming fast now with no hesitation or issues!! Hope to see you out on the water in the Boynton Beach area soon!! Thanks again!!
