Compression Numbers

So I finally received my compression tester from Harbor freight and checked compressions on the new seadoo. What are the correct numbers for the compression in a 717 motor?

If it runs, then you either did it wrong or the gauge is bad.

I know I didn't tested it perfectly, I did a cold test because I took the carb out so I couldn't turn warm the motor. The gauge is rented, don't know if it's bad or not, any way to find out? The jet ski runs, some times it has trouble re-starting after a good run, but it goes pretty fast. Don't know, the carb rebuild kit its on its way so, ill have to way if the carb rebuild fixes it. Any idea on what to look on if its not the gauge nor the test temperature?

Yep... something is up with the gauge or the way you tested. 50 psi would not run.

Check to see if the O-ring is around the part that screws into the sparkplug hole. Also, check for any other leaks.

When you do the test... you need to hold the throttle open, and you need enough power in the battery to crank the engine at a good, normal starting speed.

If you are having a hard, warm re-starting problem... either your needle and seat are leaking... or your carb diaphragm is stiff. (or not OEM Mikuni) Either of those issues will allow the fuel to leak out of the carbs, and into the engine. This is a 2 fold problem. First... the engine is now lightly flooded, and second... there is no fuel/pressure in the pump side, so now, it has to crank to get fuel into the carbs.

If this is the case... when you find yourself with this problem, hold the throttle open, and then crank. It should catch, and run, but it's best to fix the problem.

You can test the gauge by putting a known amount of pressure on it. (hook it to a compressor, and check)

But would it start?

Not having the carb installed would mess the testing?

I ordered the Mikuni Rebuild Kit, and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'll see if that fixes the problem.

When this happened I had to start it by using carb cleaner down the flame arrestor, or by pouring a little of WD-40 into the cylinders. After doing that it usually started right away.
