I searched for you and answer appears no without modifying starter.
Have to rotate housing or cut of mounting tab....

Yes you can just turn the rear bracket. Although, the drive will have 9 teeth instead of 8 and won't spin the engine as fast.

ok thanks guys saves me a hundred dollar rebuild and will get me a starter for my gsx for memorial weekend......oooohhhhhh rah

yeah i looked at it last night and it looks like all i will have to do is turn the rear mounting bracket...To me it looks the same and right now it dosent even roll over so even if it rolls over slower than normal thats fine at least it will start...only diference i can see is the 717 starter has 9 teeth like chester said and the 787 starter has 8

The mesh may not be right, and it could end up costing you a flywheel and a lot of headaches long term. Might get you through this weekend but a brush set is cheap compared to tearing it apart to replace a boogered flywheel.

I learned something myself today, I too thought an 8 tooth and a 9 tooth were not interchangeable. When Chester speaks, people listen.

Is Chester a GOD? Probably not, but he's the closest thing the forum has to one. He's helped me out more than once.

He's an actual seadoo tech (at a dealership) plus... he has a brain. So... he see's a lot, and can process the information properly.

ohh cool nice asset to have around here :) hey doc still cant figure out the bogging thing turned the baffle upside down and got the light off....... no change

thanks guys .....skewba..... i just rebuilt it and it wont rev over 4000 rpm it just bogs and shakes...

(If your talking about your GSX)
I had a bogging and shaking problem on my XP, but it would hit max rpm, bog and shake. Sometimes it would pick up though to around 4 to 5 k and start the bog and shake. It ended up being a leaky water regulator dumping to much water in the pipe. Also make sure its set correctly. You should screw it in all the way and back it out 3 turns.

Thank you for the kind words.
I actually don't work at a dealership anymore. I began riding Jet Ski's in 1984 and eventually got into racing. In 1990, I ranked fourth in Canada and got to race in the World Finals twice (90 and 91). Being mechanically inclined, an auto mechanic by trade, I decided to fix PWC's for a living. In 1994 I opened my own PWC repair shop called The Jet Factory of Canada and ran it for 11 years. Working the long hours eventually got the best of me so I closed down and went to work for a BRP dealer. I was there for just over a year and I had a lot of my old customers want me to come to their house to do repairs. There was so much demand that I quit the dealership. So for the last 7 years, I've been operating as a mobile PWC technician.

Good news to end this thread......Got the starter on BUT.........The factory one from the 787 has threads in it so you can just screw the bolts in....THE 717 starter is not threaded so you need to get different bolts and some nuts to secure it other than that it works great ...OH and yes you need to either remove the rear mlounting bracket or turn it and adjust it
