I have a challenger 180 and am wondering if I can harm the engine or jet if the boat runs on the trailer to heat up the oil for a change?

Provided you don't run it more than 60 seconds, all will be good. Any longer and you need the hose attached for the exhaust cooling and certainly no more than a few minutes or the carbon seal heats up and wears out.

The manual for the 4 tech motors indicates starting the motor for 30 seconds, running it up to about 4000 RPM and shutting it down at those RPMs. This moves the oil towards the collection point. Remove the oil then, with the throttle wide open to prevent it starting, turn the motor over for a few seconds, then remove the oil that has again been moved to the pan. Do this a few times to remove most of the oil. Make sure you remove the siphon tube from the motor before turning it over otherwise you are in for a whole world of hurt.

Once this is done you are right to replace the filter, plugs and fill the oil up again. Make sure to not overfill it because this can be almost as bad as underfilling.

Have a good look at the oil filter cap... (and make sure you have the appropriate torx socket before connecting hose, running motor, setting up oil extractor)...

Found oil not at all warm after running it on land and thought no cooling to carbon seal sketchy thus once picked up torx socket (have every other freaking tool...) just dropped it in the lake and did it there - hot oil, level boat, all good.

The best way IMO to heat up the oil is back the ski on trailer into water and run it that way, pick a day when the boat ramp isn't being used and then suck the oil out before it cools off. Otherwise, the engine needs to run at a high idle for a good while (10 minutes is good) and that's really not feasible on a trailer due to the carbon seal (unless you remove carbon seal tension or spray it with water), also changing the oil more often is another acceptable alternative.
