787 burn 2.jpg787 burn.jpg

Hi Guys

I am a liitle stumped.
I started to dewinterize my 2002 GTX RFI 787 as we are starting to come up to spring.
So after pulling off air box and throttle plate this caught my attention.

Prior to this I had Seadoo agent do services before, so i havent looked down there on the motor before. I did do the winterizing myself. I have know idea how the burn mark would appear and what is in that area of the motor to get that hot.
By looking at it I see there is no burn marks on the starter so am hoping that it was an old problem.

The burn mark is below the throttle plate and above the starter motor. I cleaned plugs and started motor to burn out old oil and it seemed fine. Havent finished as it got late.
One more thing oil pipe going to RV, i found had some air bubbles in. Last time i rode it I had to flip it on it's side as I got a rope stuck in driveshaft. Even though still had oil in pipe would this affect lubrication. Is that oil burnt or returned back.

Never seen anything like that. BUT... sicne it's on the edge... and not on the starter... I would think it's an old issue, and with an old starter. (possibly before you bought it)

Hi Tony

Thanks for the quick response. I was thinking the same thing but just needed some reassurence from the top dogs.
It just seems strange that it is such an intense burn on that point. Could a starter really get that hot. I had a quick look and couldn't see any heat damage on the hull. Would love to have known what actually happened. Do you know of any starters that have caught on fire or gotten so hot.

Suppose that is the reason why we gotta carry fire extinguishers on the ski at all times.

One last question then I will let you get on with more important things.
The RV oil supply line. Is that oil just sitting there lubricating the gear or is it pumped around as i had some air bubbles in it from when i turned it on it's side to remove a rope and I suppose with my luck i probally got air into oil injection pump as well.

Big up and a great thanks
Andrew:cheers:

The RV supply line is just gravity fed. It submerges the gears in oil the exit line on the opposite side allow air to return to the oil tank like a vent

Yep... what he said. The low hose just fills the cavity, and the top hose is a "Return"... but it's really just to let the air out.

Could a starter really get that hot

Yup! I had to replace a starter a week ago, not sure what are the parts are called, but the spring on the starters sprocket locked up and bascially was meshed to the flywheel. So my starter was spinning around 7200rpm for a half day. The starter got so hot it liquified the magnets and burnt a hole through the starter casing. When I get home my wife says the one motor won't start back up, she does explain that it was making a really weird sound earlier though ... :banghead: Of course instead of shutting it off and waiting for me she goes wakeboarding with her friends. Anyway new starter and I'm all good. At least nothing else broke because of this ... I'll post some pics its pretty brutal.

Well thanks for answering that question.

I've seen it on cars when that happens but it just tears itself apart.
Well atleast nothing major. I was really worried by the burn.
So a spinning starter could the magnets that is some extreme heat.

So from now on you gonna make sure the wife knows how the boat should sound and if anything else she must turn off and call you.
I am licky in that way. Hell if she sees smoke coming from the water she stops or if it doesn't start first time she calls. ( Can be irritating )

Would like to see the pics when you can.
Thanks Bud
