I got a 1996 Seadoo GTX...I've owned it for the past 3 years...The carbon ring shattered on it and I need to install a new one...I was trying to find a thread on this but i cant seem to find one...maybe someone out there has done a carbon ring replacemnt before and can talk me through it...if someone has pictures that would be great also...on a scale of 1 thru 10 how hard would it be?...do i need special tools?...any help would be appreciated.

it's easy.

You will need:

1) A new Carbon Ring
2) A new stainless ring
3) the O-rings for the stainless ring
4) a new neoprene seal for the pump.

The quick "How To":

1) remove the steering nozzle
2)remove the gray PTO cover on the rear of the engine
3) push the stainless ring toward the transom, and (depending what you have)
A) Cut the old O-ring
B) Pop off the C-clip
4) Remove the cooling lines at the transom. (they hook to the pump)
5) remove the pump
6) Remove the clamp on the PTO boot and slide the driveshaft out
7) remove the carbon ring

Now... install the new parts, and re-assemble.

It's best if you get the service manual, but its not hard to do. I think I did mine in about 30 minutes. It took more time to get the tools out, and to clean up after.

wow, 30 mintues...I thought it was going to be an all day job...i just got the carbon ring in the mail, I'll order the other parts as soon as I can...I was reading a thread, with a bunch of pcitures, on how to change the pump oil on a similar ski...I'm going to use that as a reference...so i got to drain and replace the pump oil correct?

i'd re-use th steel collar, just get some 1000/2000 grit sandpaper wet/dry, and wet it, then "lap" the flat part. I would invest inthe metal c-clip if yours had the o-ring though...removethe reverse bucket/nozzle assy, then cone, tip trailer up so all oil is drained out, re-install cone, the tilt trailer down and refill w/ 75w-90syn oil.

Yes, you can do it without changing the pump oil. Make sure that you also replace the bellowed hose that the carbon ring clamps to.

Success!...it took me a while to figure things out but i was able to take everything apart...everything looks to be in good condition...the picture includes the new carbone ring.

When you say "C-clip" is that an after market part to replace the O-ring..the one that does doesn't go inside the ring-seal carrier (stainless ring)??...also I was looking at the seadoo manuel for my 96 GTX (part #17) in the drive system...it's refered as a gasket but when I dissasembled my drive shaft It didnt see that part..? is it another O-ring? where exactly does that gasket go?

look up on parts diagram a 97gtx, it shows the c-clip and part #, it'll go where the o-ring goes and yes it'll go inside the steel collar

I just looked at a manual for a 97 GTX...no c-clip??..same exact set up except for that gasket (part# 17) that I was talking about...
