Bought a 97 GTI for the wife!

My GTI with the 717 gets a little over 42 with my 190lb body on it in smooth water. Of course I'm coming off of a new motor, new fuel system and rebuilt carbs, and new RV and cover. I used to get up around 50 before so I'll be trying to narrow down what's different than before.

My 97 GTI got around 46 mph when I tested on GPS a few years ago. That was after about 10 hours on a rebuilt engine so I'll have to recheck now that it's got probably 40 hours.

It's a pretty boring ski for me but good for family and doing some fishing :-)

Great find, nice looking machine. Looks exactly like my wife's '97. For 'only' 85 hp, it is a surprisingly versatile machine. Rides like a dream, tows tubes well, and has great fuel consumption. My wife and I traded for a couple of hours last time out and she couldn't wait to get back on hers, lol!

The best we've seen on GPS is 47 mph. Doesn't seem to matter if it is my fat 235 pound butt on it or her 100 pound lighter one...same speed. I added a tachometer just for grins and to fill the big black plugged hole...amazing the visual difference it makes to the instrument panel.

As for the abraded gelcoat...as others have noted, it isn't that big of a deal. I'd only be concerned about water intrusion if it was left in the drink for weeks at a time. I would, however, do a quality gelcoat repair over the winter, as suggested above, if it was mine, simply because I like having things look 'like new' as much as possible as well as to ward off possible future problems.

Anyone know a good repair kit or place to get one to fix the abrasion that wreckless showed in his pic? I have a very similar sized exposed area in the same spot on mine from rubbing on sand. Mine doesn't have a soft spot or is leaking but am planning on fixing this winter. I was just looking at Overton's options and didn't know there were so many options for hull repair. Not sure what to narrow it down too. Mainly trying to avoid buying the wrong thing or too much of what's needed.

I am told that there is a roll on kit out there somewhere. It looks easy enough to apply, I just want to make sure I buy enough, but not too much. That stuff is expensive! lol
