My friend wants to boil his carbs (before rebuilding) (95 GTX) I told him just to use lots of cleaner, but he is still going to do it, is he nuts? will he be doing damage or is this good?
I think the soup after would taste like crap. uke: :lols:
Ummmmm..... boiling water? I don't think it will do much. Back in the day... we would boil carb bodies in caustic soda. (toxic) If you can find carb dip that you heat up... that was always good... but I can't say that I've seen it in 15 years.
I'm with you... just use regular (not dechlorinated) carb cleaner, and compressed air. (that's how I do them) And, if you want to strip the paint, and make them look new... use a soda blaster. (external only)
They sell a chemtool carb "dip" still at any auto part store I believe...cleanes carbs,parts,ect.. It was in a metal gallon jug..brown liquid...smelt bad. My uncle use to refer to using this chemical bath as "boiling" out a carb. Cleanes them up real good! just dont leave any rubber parts or gaskets in it.
That's cold dip. The old hot dip was AWESOME !!!!!! I find that the cold dip is dam near usless unless you are just trying to de-gum an 80,000 mi mid 70's Holley/Carter/Rodchester carb.
"Boiling" a carb is just that. (boiling) But, the chemicals to do so have been outlawed since the early 80's.
I never run into any carbs bad enough to have dip them...plus your gonna lose paint. I'm with the Dr....carb cleaner and compressed air. I use some bent wire bristles on the jets to make sure any scum is worked loose.
I have been meaning to buy a sonic cleaner from harbor freight and try it out. their bigger one you could get a whole carb in and its heated!
