My brand new gasket blew out the bottom today on my 97 GTX. Do I need to apply sealant on both surfaces to prevent this from happening again? If so, what sealant is best?

You need to check to see if the bolts holding the pipe came loose. On some engines they have a tendency to vibrate loose for some reason. You need to use locktite on the bolts and be sure they are torqued to factory specs. I had this problem with one of the engines in my sportster 1800 and it was a real pain in the butt. I think I finally got mine fixed, I used red locktite on mine, and used a larger bolt..

I don't put any sealant on the exhaust gaskets. If it blew out... it's because the bolts came loose, or the mating surfaces are not flat. OR... the exhaust is plugged up. (but it wouldn't run)

Get a new gasket, make sure you torque to the proper spec (18 Lb/ft) and double check them before tightening any of the pipe mounting bolts. If you over torque the bolts... when the pipe gets hot... they will stretch, and then they will be loose when it all cools down.

The OE bolts are metric cap screws. How did you use a larger bolt?

I'm not sure about that either. Also... thread locker is useless in the exhaust. The heat after one run is enough to decay it.

The only other thing I would suggest is to buy new lock washers. If the old ones aren't sharp... then they can't do their job.

I think the bolts were tight enough. I think that the 2 surfaces weren't coming together flat enough to pinch the gasket tight enough on the bottom. I will reassemble the exhaust from the manifold down instead of from the muffler up!
