Beeper Woes

I bought my 95 sportster last summer and the beeper worked the first time I went out and but never worked after that. Ive been looking on here and saw the replacement radio shack beeper and picked one up. I just assumed the beeper was bad. Well, I went to replace it and just for giggles I tested the old beeper and it works fine when I hard wire it to a 12v source. I checked the readily available connections under the dash and the fuses in the gray box. Everything looked good. But i still get no beep when I turn the key/lanyard on like it is supposed to. What gives?

My beepers on my Seadoo PWC and jet boat also dont beep, yet they start up fine.

I examined the DESS lanyard and it looked spotless but I used some rubbing alcohol, tooth brush and a tissue on it anyway to cut any grease, wax or oil that might be on it.

No apparent dirt on the tissue but now the thing beeps again.

Apparently oil, dirt, grease, suntan lotion or any number of other things can create enough resistance in the contacts to prevent beeping from occuring.

Try a good cleaning of the DESS and the dash contacts.

The old beepers will go intermittent before they die. Wire up the new beeper (hook to the constant terminal) and it should work. There is a fuse in the line... but on the 95, I'm not sure where it is. (probably back in the electrical box by the engine)

Good points... but... He doesn't have a DESS system.

Also... fix your beeper. I've seen many posts on this board where guys cooked their engine because of a bad beeper. I know some boats have an Over-Temp light... but you may drive around for 20 minutes before you notice it.

I wired up the new beeper and it still didnt work. I went over all the connections and didnt see any bad connections. I didnt see an inline fuse either.

But somehow along the process it started working again. I didnt really do anything so I guess it was a bad connection somewhere and me pulling apart/replacing each connection fixed. But regardless, thanks for the help. It gave me the motivation to actually take the time to troubleshoot it.

I just did this, bought a new one from radio shack, installed it, it fit perfectly, I plugged it in, and I heard 1 small beep when in neutral, but now I didnt hear it again?

Did you crimp or solder the beeper? Put the boat in "forward", turn the key on, and hit the start button. It shouldnt start but give you 4 short beeps to tell you youre not in neutral. Just check/clean all the connections.

I did not solder it, I used the screws that came and crimped it, I put it a little forward, im going to try better later...
