I finally gave up on trying to fix my 96 GSX on my own. So I took it to the dealership and they just called and said the MPEM was bad. Don't have a lot of information yet - got to go pick it up. They told me $600 for a new one and no guarantee that it would run (since it's been setting for a coupl e of years).

Not sure what to do now - I'm not going to spend $600 on the new one. Not sure whether to cut my losses and try to sell it as is, try to part it out, or buy a used on. I've looked on ebay - not sure what to think about that.

Any suggestions??

The 96GSX is a great ski.

$600 is a fair price, especially if its new, and from a Dealer, if its used be sure to get a warranty. Also there is a repair to replace a diode on the MPEM circuit board, see the thread on this forum.

You can check some things on the ski before you make a decision. Make sure the motor turns over freely, if you remove a cover toward the rear of the motor there is a flywheel. Remove the spark plugs, squirt a little oil down the spark plug holes (fogging oil is best), and see if the motor turns freely.

Check the impeller and the wear ring.

See if the ski still has the original grey fuel lines, if it does you will need to replace the fuel lines, main filter, replace or clean the carb filters, replace the fuel selector valve, and most likely overhaul the carbs.

Other than obvious things, like hull integrity, steering, cables, thats about all you can check on a non running ski.

Picked it up today. They told me it had power going to the MPEM but no power coming out. I guess I'll look for a used one.

They gave me the part number as 278000897. Will I need that specific part number or are MPEM's interchangeable to a degree (for example same year, same model, or same engine)???
