It will start and idle great, but when I go to open the throttle the rpms fail to climb and it begins to run rough and back fire.

Any insight is greatly appreciated...thanks.

No year, make or model?....

You have no year, make or model listed in your thread. You have also failed to put it in your avatar. So, without knowing that, it's gonna be hard to help you out.

I'll give it a shot....... If it's a 2 stroker, your either going to find the timing off a bit, either at the pick-up coil or maybe your rotary valve plate is off a tooth (if you've recently removed it, this is what I'd look at first).

You can also get back fire if the plate that covers the rotary is out of spec to the plate, it'll cause either hard start conditions or back firing.

Please put your year, make and model in your avatar........

A lean carburation condition, rev limiter in mpem malfuncion,
Bad crank seals, rotary valve timing, ignition timing from sheared
keyway so flywheel position dislocated, Stator 9:30 alignment off,
Metal particles in stator coil(s), intake leak cause B-F.
