Attach garden hose before or after starting engine?

I am trying to get our 99 GTX RFI to start. I have a garden hose to attach. But I am confused if I should have the garden hose attached and running while I am trying to start or after I get it started.

Start the ski first then the hose. When it comes time to shut it off turn the water off first then wait a few seconds for the engine to clear the water from the exhaust and then turn the ski off.

If you don't do it in this order you will fill the engine with water and can end up doing some damage.

Thanks! I assume the hose is to keep the engine cool?

Yes. But don't run it much longer than about five minuets, as the pump is not being cooled unless the ski is in the water.
