Are there any "good" aftermarket mpems available? I need one for a ski I am going to flip, but I don't want to sell a turd.

Most are not a quality product. Some have bought them and never had an issue. I'd say most that buy them aren't happy with them.

We would need to know how many have been sold and how many failed. Just judging complaints isn't enough information to measure.

Well, respectfully, I am not sure how you would get that information. So in light of that, the only thing we can go on is what we have heard. There are very few posts here that have said, "I'm using an aftermarket MPEM and it works great", but there are several saying, got a ski with an aftermarket mpem and it is giving me problems. Bottom line is that since MPEMs are expensive, and you cant get them new, many people would use a viable alternative. So IF an aftermarket unit was the way to go, more people would be using them. Just my thoughts. But it would be cool if you would call the aftermarket companies and ask them for the units sold vs defect ratio. And then post that info back here. But I doubt you will get any real data by calling them.

All I'm saying is that nobody goes to an Internet forum to say that everything's working just fine. Reading only this forum, one would think that there are no PWCs running without issues. That's obviously not the case.

I don't need an aftermarket MPEM, so I'm not going to call a MFR to talk about them. If I was in the market for one, I definitely would call and gather information, as any smart consumer would.

The MSD 4255 has been out for over 20 years and is very reliable. They are for 787's but some people use them on 951's also. I have seen three bad ones but over 20 good ones but I buy used stuff so....

Good point. I probably should not even be in this thread.... Since this is a flipper ski, I was thinking that he wanted a cheap MPEM just to get it running. But in the big picture, there are good aftermarket units out there. But they cost way more then a used OEM one.
