adding a bilge pump to a 97 xp

Just need to know how its wired into the electrical system on a seadoo that came with a electric pump. My stock bailers work great, but I'd like a back up in case I start to sink like I did last season :) I'm about to buy a stock pump, but what else would I need ? Relay, switch ...

I can tell you what I have and how it's wired. I have 3 ski's and have bilge pumps in all three. I have Rule 500 PWC pumps, they are auto sensing they automatically check for water every 30 seconds. I have them basically hardwired to the battery attached to a 5 amp fuse with an on/off switch. I sometimes leave my ski's in the water for a couple of weeks at a time so I have a solar battery maintainer that I leave attached to keep the battery charged, the solar battery maintainer wouldn't be needed if you're not going to leave the ski in the water.

The Rule pump works real well because it's small, I just have them glued to the hull with Locktite silicone seal, haven't had on come loose yet. It's gonna cost you about 50.00 to 75.00 but I think it's pretty cheap insurance. The bailers are marginal at best and of course don't work at all if the ski is docked.

A word of caution, I did my 96GTI first and put the output hose in the wrong place, when the pump runs it fills up the foot well, so I have a short piece of hose I leave attached to the outlet so it discharges out the back.

Did seadoo place a toggle switch in any model, I found the relay, and sensor, but looking for a water proof toggle thinking maybe the info center switches may work.. hmmmm

Don't know, I suppose you could mount a toggle switch (rule makes a waterproof one), on one of the blanks of the info. center. I just mounted mine on a convenient spot. On the GSX which I think is similar to your 97XP, I mounted it on the flat area in front of the seat near the fuel selector valve. I would post a picture but I left my camera at work. I can post it tomorrow if you like.

I don't see a need for a relay you're only pulling a couple of amps.

That looks clean, looks like i bought the same pump . does the pump allow water in through the outlet when its off?

I don't know, I just went to the garage and blew through the outlet and it was clear, so I guess the answer would be yes.

as for the water going back in question; yes these pumps allow that, however, even if the discharge is below the surface of the water (as it is factory on my 02 XP) as long as you loop the discharge hose up above the water line (inside the ski) you will be fine. water will only go in it a few inches. Factory mine goes from the pump, then attaches to a approx 4 foot line. it loops all the way up under the seat up to where the fuel baffle is (flip seat up out of way) else you will hit your head on it 200x... When I bought my 02, the pump was so crammed with sand it didn't work, after I replaced it and the discharge line that was broken, it works... amazing. it's the auto sensing kind as well, although with how I ride (under water a lot) I should have just bought one that can run 'hot' all the time.... factory the pump is wired to be 'on' whenever the ski is on. no switch. but it only pumps when it finds water... not the entire time.... so there can be a significant delay between me sinking the ski (i've almost gotten a barrel roll) and it starting to pump... i just can't do too many underwater slides in a row... i've had it fill with water up past the VTS... almost every trip out! but the pump does its thing while the skis is going slow / idle... the bailers, if kept clean (pull them out, remove line and CLEAN then) pull a LOT of water out fast while your doing 25+

what i'd like is a little red light on my dash that lights up when I get over 3" of water in the hull, that way I'd know to take it easy on the submarine moves until it gets pumped out...

What you can do is buy a bilge pump float switch or make one. When the switch detects x-amount of water, have it wired to a little LED on your dash. Most LED's run about 2-5 volts, so you'd have to step it down with a voltage regulator. Simple stuff you can get from radio shack.

hey lou, (from your pic) if your fuel selector is in the middle in front of the seat, what are those other two knobs on the left and right? (fuel and oil?, assuming the oil filler isnt UNDER your seat like mine)

The left side is the fuel, right side oil. I would really prefer the oil fill under the seat, the GSX doesn't have a dipstick, so it's always a guess how much oil is in the tank. Also you almost have to use a funnel to add oil, not real handy when you're at the lake.

Any suggestions as to where to place the toggle switch for the bilge pump on a 97 GTX? Haven't seen one on but there is no
"logical" location like on my 98 GSX. The only potential location I can come up with is inside the "glove box" beneath the steering.
Ideas anyone?

Lamajama - I have a 96 GTX. How about on the side, but out of the way of your or your passenger legs. I wouldn't put it in the glove box. You would have to remove it if you needed to get to the gas tank filler tube.

Maybe on the side of the glove box. There may be enough clearance since the sides kinda slant out a bit.

Just another thought...if on the side by legs, it might get wet and possibly short out.

Let us know where you put it.

I doubt it would work on the side the the glove box - as you know the seat encompasses the glove box. I think
it would be an issue on the side as well in terms of banging it potentially. When I was thinking of the glove box, I
knew it would be an issue if you need to get to the inside area of the seadoo - which in my opinion is fairly (hopefully)
rare - and it would be fairly easy to unscrew the toggle piece and slip it out. I'm pretty sure this is what I will do if I
go thru with the bilge as I really do not wish to modify the front area of the seadoo.

I just went to the garage and took a look at my 96GSX, I think the handlebar cover is the same as the GTX. It's going to be a tight fit but I think you could put a toggle switch between the choke and DSS post on the handlebar cover. BTW Rule makes a waterproof toggle switch.

There is a toggle switch on my '97 GSX (pretty much the same as the '96 GSX) put on by the previous owner who added a bilge pump. From memory I think it is in front of the gauges just out of view in the picture where I indicated with the arrow.. I'm trying to find a picture of the ski that shows the switch but haven't found one yet.

Thanks Lou and bigJake for those ideas. I looked at a 99 GTX in my garage and Lou, you're right it would be a tight fit and the wiring
would obviously have to go through the steering column - not sure if that's a pain or not. Lou's idea of locating it in the instrument
(gauge) panel is an idea too. That would also be a tight fit and require much longer wiring which isn't impossible. Both are
ideas that I never even thought of so thanks for the input. I should be going to the hanger where I store it in the next few days so I'll
take a closer look. I already know I'll have to get a different toggle switch as the one I bought is rectangular and too large to fit in
the choke area and gauge area. I need to find a switch with a round base.

If you can get the switch to fit it won't be a problem running the wiring down the steering column.
