the transponder into a vase of water so it is touching water. Then power up system and check for depth readout. Instructions were wrong for my unit. It is not mode button but rather right keypad, left or right buttons to cycle between rpm, settings and depth. If all good then apply gel pad and install in base. I finally tested mine in a lake the other day and had mixed results. Hoping it was a messed up gel pad from removing the transponder to test. Replaced the gel pad the other day but have not tested it. Mine was showing 655 feet in anything over 25 feet or so of water. Seemed accurate in less than 25 feet, and was accurate even at 30 or 40mph.
