I am going to be looking and hopefully purchasing a XP in the very near future. I am told that nothing is wrong with the machine besides electric trim not working and he has unplugged it. He also told me that this is a common problem on the seadoos. is this something common and do I need it to use the ski? is this a vital feature to use on a jet ski. he made claim that it is common for all.

First of all, whatever you do you need to take this or any used watercraft for at least a 30minute test cruise in the water before forking you hard-earned dinero, unless the expectations of problems are clearly laid out up front, you fully understand them, and have plans to resolve the issues on your own dime, which CAN get expensive quickly.

You should also do a compression test on the engine, my factory-fresh 2001 951 blows 137psi in both cylinders, some of the older ones blew more.

I know there are a lot of guys on this forum that like a 951, personally I'm not a big fan. Basically you're trading performance for reliability. A 951 has a relatively short engine life usually around 200 hours for a rebuild while a 787 will go 400 hours.

Assuming the trim is the same as the VTS on other skis, yes, it is a common failure.

If you buy the ski do not plug it in. Once either the motor or the module goes bad they tend to hurt the MPEMs (main brain). And MPEMs are NOT cheap. Like 500 dollars ish.

They are fixable. Most do not. They get the trim to the middle point an leave them there.

I'm to anal for that personally. If it is on my ski it is in perfect working order. Just the way I am.

Let me be the first to second this, but I love stress so I have one. I am already building my next engine. That way I can have a spare on hand.

Maybe one day I'll break down and have a new lanyard programmed just so I can find out how many hours my 951 has on it. I guess it lasts a good while now that it's not running lean anymore, 2-strokes tend to live a short life that way.

I think if you get it jetted perfectly and keep it sealed that they will go longer. I am on a quest to make the reliable 951. It will happen now that I have my jetting perfect. Unfortunately, my current engine suffered ingestion, but it is running strong anyways.

Yeah, you really don't want that worthless old 951 cluttering up your garage for an eternity, send them to me for proper disposal.

Thanks for the replies guys, I bought the doo from a guy who owns a shop (cars/trucks). however he has been working on these for over 10 years. the motor was previously replaced, and he just did the driveline bearings new battery and serviced the pump. I picked it up for $2000. ready to get my hands dirty if need be :D
