Hey guys!

In preparation of changing out the oil filter and lines this winter, I'm reading in the service manual that I'll need a special tool (polygonal key, #529 035-505) to get at that SOB nut on the tuned pipe flange. Is that required, or is there a work-around? What does the factory tool cost?

Thanks,

Mike

It's best to use that tool.
A few members take a "correct" size open end/box and grind it down to be thin and uses that. Minnetonka4me
I think the OEM tool about $15.....

Only other way would be to remove the carbs and use a 15mm box end wrench. I'd love to try the tool some day.

Oh yes - If you don't have that tool then believe - Just take off the carbs. Waaay easier. Otherwise, plan on chucking spanners all around the garage.
It's a proper pig - Been there done that!!!

you can just drop the carbs down without unhooking everything and be able to reach the nut with a regular wrench.

But yes the OEM and SBT tool suck. They are soft metal that bend too easy.

Buy a obstruction wrench with a 15mm, and grind/thin it out on all sides. Then heat it up and put some slight bends in it to clear the pipe better so you can turn it farther.

Nick, can you post a pic of that ground down and reshape wrench that you made?

Here is mine. Don't know how it compares to others but it works just fine for me. As mentioned above don't waste your $$ on the one from SBT. Its very cheap and flimsy. Only good thing about that one is you can use a torque wrench on it. If your into that sort of thing.

Minnetonka,
You are right about the SBT wrench. It bent the second time I used it. I also had to grind the head down to get it to fit over the nut. It was nice to be able to use the torque wrench on it. I wonder if the OEM wrench is better...
