Hello All

Im new to this forum but having looked through loads of posts i carnt find the answers to the problems i am having with my 97 xp. Ill start at the beginning last year i used the ski earlier in the year with no problems left the ski for a month or so, i started it just briefly onshore and it started fine i then left it for another month and it would not turn over. The main issue is the ski will not turn over with either one or both spark plugs in but will turn over nice without them in. Things i have tested i bought a new starter motor and battery still no change. i took the head off and there does not seem to be any corrosion. the pto turns over by hand also which convinces me the engine is not seized. also did a compression test and got approx 145 on both. i have bypassed all the electrics and run the battery directly to the starter to rule out an electrical issue but again no change. please help any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Cheers Neil

Hmmm, sounds like a repeat of my thread: 96 XP Can't Turn Over with Plugs installed

Hopefully your solution is a easy repeat as well. You mentioned you bypassed all electronics and ran it straight to the starter. By any chance are you using jumper cables? My problem was I was using jumper cables for the entire debug. The jumper cables (thick 6AWG) had to much of a voltage drop when drawing that much current.

If its not that easy, triple check your connections, brush them off to make sure they are getting great contact. Check both the positive and negative. In my opinion the starter on at least my 96 XP is a bad design. It is barely powerful enough to turn the engine over. Any voltage drop, excessive resistance makes the starter not powerful enough.

Try running your PWC battery inside the hull and then hookup IN parallel to a car battery. Make sure the car is off!

I went as far as removing the drive shaft to make sure the drive shaft was not seized. That was just a waste of time as I could turn the PTO over by hand (although it is rather difficult).

Good luck.

thanks pyro sorry for not getting back earlier. well would you believe it after another battery charge, having the starter tested and cleaning all the cables again it will now turn over with the plugs in! very strange as i have done all these things before. the problem now is that it will not start. i have tested the spark and its good and i believe the fuel is getting through as the bottom of the spark plugs are moist after i have tried to start it. i have put approx 10 litres of fuel in to mix with the fuel which was already in (max 3-4 litres) which i think is probably a little stale after being in the tank for 18 months. Has anyone any ideas what i need to do?

What you need to do

What You Need To Do is to click on the thread starter button when you want to ask for personal ski advice, You are wecome to post any comments in someones thread if you can be knowledgable & helpful. Wecome!

Gas can go bad in 3 weeks. Old bad gas is your problem. Open the gas cap to depressurize the tank. remove the airbox and useing your garden air compressor, air chuck, remove the supply & reserve fuel lines from the carb(s) and blow any gas in the lines back into the tank. Syphon the gas out of the tank, by dis-connecting the gas fill rubber hose from the tank after removeing the front basket. Use a rag on a stiff wire to swab gas and any debris out. Look up by the steering in there for the fuel filter/water separator and unscrew its bowl and clean it and the filter in there.
If you have grey tempo fuel lines, I advise you buy new line and a fuel selector valve and replace yours. You will need to do a quick clean of the carb(s) before attemting start-up.

Post a thread of your subject matter, please, so We can help.

I bet you bought an aftermarket Seadoo starter and got a 9 tooth instead
of an OEM. You need An 8 tooth high torque starter OEM 278001301 starter.
Your crank seals may leak oil into the lower case and that will reduce ability to start. With *plugs out and wires put on the safty ground lugs, spin the engine useing the starter at 10 sec intervals for about 2-3 minutes, and if you have oil in there it will shoot out the *holes. Look at your oil tank level and mark the level next time you put the ski up awhile, then look at the mark before you next ride for excessive loss of oil. You may need an overhaul if the engine continues to smoke when rideing. Most older Seadoos smoke alittle at start-up, but quit after warming up. Bills86e

hi thanks for the response the starter was bought from my local seadoo specialist who has done work on the ski before and actually took my starter in and replaced it so i am sure it is the right one. and the problem with it not turning over with the plugs in hgas been resolved. i will have a go at getting all the old fuel out and try again.

thanks again i will let you know how i get on.

hello all i have now sent air through the pipes back into the tank and emptied it i chrcked the carbs the filters were really clean and also in the water seperator this filter was clean too. unfortunatley the ski will still not start any more ideas?

cheers

I am having the same type of problem, and I think it has to be either the shaft barrings, or that my battery is not cranking out enough power to get the motor started.

verify that you have spark. Then dump a cap full of gas into spark plug holes, to get it to kick over. The inline filter should be filled or will fill up when motor fires up. If not, your o-ring is bad, in which will cause your ski not to fire up, your pulling air into the fuel system.

With the carbs off, did yuo verify that the RV was turning while turning the PTO? Is yuor fuel lines hooked up correctly?

seadooya you are a hero! put a capful of gas in the spark holes and she fired straight up she is blowing abit of blue/white smoke but i think that is just down to the fact she has not ran for over year.

thanks again

Tempo lines...

can someone please explain why the grey fuel lines need to be swapped out on these 97 xp's?

Usually, I just give answers to questions that have been asked before. But the problems with these grey Tempo lines has so many posts and threads in this forum, I don't see a reason.

PLease, do a bit of reading through the forum before just throwing a question out there that's been asked 1.2 million times.

I actually just answered this today, so it's even on the front pages still of our home page........

sorry i dont look at everysubforum. i was just reading his thread and thought of the question and just thought i'd ask it quick. it looks like i'll need to replace mine. So could you tell me what kind/diameter hose and length or are you goign to make me search for it:cheers:

587's thru 720's = 25' 1/4", 787-947 = 5' 5/16" & 20' 1/4".
enough to do the two vents to the check valves there.
