97 gtx rpm's

I just completely rebuilt a 1997 gtx from top end to fuel lines to anything I could get my hands on. I have broke in the motor and have taken it out every chance I get. This is my first pwc and so far everything runs awesome. The one issue I have is that my speedometer soes not work. That will be one of my winter projects. I know its running good because I passed by most pwc's that were out there. My question is what should the rpm's max out at? What is the average top speed for the 97 gtx? And, are there any upgrades I can do to improve overall top speed and initial take off. I am going to be going through the jet pump this winter as well. I already have the new wear ring.

I know these are a lot of little questions but I better ask now before I forget.
In anyone's opinion how was the 97 gtx. Was it a good pwc?

I also have a 1997 gtx. when I am running flat out I can get the seadoo to peak out at around 51 mph according to the guage. The highest I have ever been able to get the RPM up to is 6750 RPM when running flat out. Since this is also my first seadoo I dont know if this is normal but I suspect that I might be able to get the rpm up to 7000 by either doing a tuneup on the engine or replacing my impeller which has some minor erosion damage.

Did you ever get the speedometer working? What was the problem before you fixed it, and what did you do to fix it?

I have a 97 GTX I recently acquired, and took it out for the first time today. The speedo doesn't work until I get to about 40 MPH, and then it kicks in. Same thing when I slow down- it stops when I drop below 40.

I read something about getting a paddlewheel kit earlier. It's a lot cheaper than getting an entire speedometer sensor. However, I can't find one anywhere.

If everything is stock, 6750 (+ or - 50) is the proper RPM. If it were revving at 7000, it would indicate a damaged impeller and/or wear ring.

I did get the spedometer to start working just by cleaning the wheel and the line. make sure ends of line are clean.

Yes, Don't push for more on the rpm's. 6750 is pretty good. I have rebuilt plenty of the rotax top ends and you are in a good range. The 97 GTX is a great model. I recently sold mine and bought a 1997 sea doo challenger 1800. this way the whole family can go out. This one has been sitting around a few years so I am rebuilding both top ends and re-doing the interior. This model of sea doo boat has the same 787 rotax motor. (Actually it has two) Which are very reliable.

Thanks for the info. I just did clean the paddlewheel. It was spinning OK, but seems to do a little better after I sprayed some WD 40 on it.

As far as the lines - you mean the electrical connector where the wires from the paddlewheel doodad hook into the wiring harness? I took that apart, sprayed it with WD 40, and hit it with a toothbrush. I hope that works.

Actually, the shop manual only lists the rev limiter setting at 7200 +/- 50 for the 97 GTX. This is what the engine will rev to when not under load. In the water, you won't get much more than 6750. The rev limiter setting is set much higher than the actual operating RPM.
