97 GSX bogs and dies at initial acceleration

My 97 GSX tends to bog down when you accelerate from the initial start. Once it dies and restarts 3 or 4 times it seems to be ok and will accelerate to full power and run fine. A restart after sitting for a few minutes will trigger the problem. On restart, boat does not want to accelerate and again bogs and dies. Have found that by applying a partial choke and lightly feathering the throttle, the boat will launch. Once it accelerates, it is good to go and will restart and accelerate fine as long as it doesn't sit for a while. I have replaced plugs frequently and shows no other signs of problems once the initial acceleration issue is dealt with.

Any ideas what I need to do?

As a 2nd ??, there are 2 red plastic [round] caps at the top of the engine. They are held in place by wire clips. I have released the clips and the caps are spring loaded from the underside. I immediately depressed the springs and replaced the caps with the clips. What are these things?

Your high speed check valve may be leaking a little. Basically, when it leaks... the regulator will drain, and it will run with some air in it. Then... it takes that initial "Rev-up" to re-fill, or purge out the air.

You may be able to get over the issue though. Open your low screws about an 1/8th of a turn. A little extra fuel in the transition may help. BUT... generally... the carbs need to come apart, and be properly checked/cleaned.

If the problem is very bad... then the pilot jets could be clogged up.

the red caps are your rave valves they go inside the engine and open up at high rpm;s thats what the spring is for...how do your plugs look after running full throttle for say 10 sec and then pulling the kill switch.......first do this for me...check the compression and do you still have the grey fuel lines in your ski

Thanks to both posts. It will be a while before I can check things out, I stripped the seat yesterday and have to wait for the foam to dry. Unfortunately it has been raining for 3 days with more to come. The boat is in the barn in the meantime.

Think I'll take it over to my boat mechanic when I get the seat done and let him go thru the carbs. My guess it that is my problem. I have never had them rebuilt so they are due. Will check about the color of the gas lines. What is the problem with the gray ones?

The fuel lines break down from the ethanol gas and fill the fuel system with the hated green goo, clogging everything.

Im having the same kind of issue with my 96 SPX 657. It runs perfect, idles fine but have to feather the throttle to get speed once you get about half speed, it will go to WOT no problem and seems fine. Just the initial take off there is no power there at all.

dealing with it right now too......turn your low speed screws out about a 1/4 turn and see if this helps

if you have the gray fuel lines do not waste time and money cleaning the carbs until AFTER you replace the gray fuel lines or you will just have to do it again.

i live in canada and only one gas station has ethanol and i dont go there so i doubt its the line but ill check em out just in case, where are the low speed idle screws ive never touched the carbs on this machine. Is it possible they just viberate in?

no they have a spring on them to preven that ....they are on the bottom of your carbs ..they look like a T handle with a spring on it...just turn it left about a 1/4 turn and give her a run....JAKE 911 i like it we gotta start a thread about that and have you solve problems like a super hero

ethanol fuel

Just for your information, fuel suppliers in Ontario can add up to 10% ethanol to fuel and not post it at the pumps. Just because you are not going to the pump with the Ethanol sign does not mean you are not getting fuel with ethanol.

The following is directly from the Ontario Ministry of Energy web site. Note their comment about 5% average ethanol. I know if I keep searching I will find the max is 10% with no labeling.

Ontario currently requires that gasoline contain an average of five per cent ethanol.
