This is the grey ghost year correct? I found one for sale by me. Guy wants $1200 with a real nice trailer. Haven't gone see it in person yet, but I read there were issues with this first batch of 951 engines. Most should have been fixed under Warranty? Question is what where the problems with this year and what should I look for on this particular ski.

The Grey Ghost was/is awesome but yeah there were some issues for sure. Fastest thing on the water in 97. It's a good idea to stay away from the first year/model of any mass produced mechanical thing generally. In this case there are some performance advantages to enjoy if you get the issues worked out.

This first model(5625 I think) had a larger exhaust pipe and manifold that revs better than the black pipe that followed till the end of 951 production. It has I pump and nozzle setup on it that is specific to this model only.

The new engine had to pass standards to be imported. They put tubes on the diaphragm plates hooked to a solenoid to lean it out on the high end. These need to be taken off and the carbs need to be re-jetted. These first white engines have many parts that are not interchangeable with the later 951's. The update for the pipe to manifold water leak problem would have to addressed.

Oops my confusion. I thought the "grey ghost" was referring to the motor - not the machine....

So my old 98 red and purple GSX is the "hangover hurl??"

This thing was a pos. Asked him to start it when he jumped it I thought the rod was gonna gonna come flying out. Asked him if I could compression test it.. Yea 89 psi on both cylinders. Keep on walking

I'll assume it was on Craigs, and I'd almost be willing to bet it was glory shots of the outside of the ski and trailer and not one of under the seat. Unless it's a POS I won't even call on it and it has to be SUB $500. Pricing that at $1200 with pics of just the outside his phone is ringing, put an under seat shot up and that MF'r ain't getting a prank call.

That being said--IF, and that would be a HUGE IF I were to get a GSX the grey ghost would be the one. I love that color combo.

Dude always has apparently crap sitting out for sale. I just happen to stop today. Oh and it didn't have a title. I offered him $800 only because I really wanted trailer and figured I could break even with parting it out.. Of course I had to sit threw the explanation of how he is losing money. So I told him when he needs $700 cash to call me and I'll come get it. You just offered $800 though he says. Aggregated at this point from listening to his bs. Told him that rant just cost a $100.

He was a fool to turn down your offer. It's a beautiful hull, too bad there is no title or it would be a good candidate for the updates. That knocking you heard was probably the dreaded piston slap.

I'd skip the 97.5 951. I also personally skip the 98 951. the 99 went to a better electrical box and dual coils. Keep looking

although, some of the RXPs in my area, in the fall, have fallen to $4-5k... within 1-2k of a working 951 anyway... newer tech, quieter, no choke, no burning of $50/gallon oil... (I seriously burn close to $400/year in oil)... so for me... moving to a 4-tech, at least for the wife's skis... may make some sense here.
