96 xp hard starting

Wow is all I have to say, I just bought 2 96 xps and took them out last weekend. I have owned a jetski in the past but these things haul a$$. I couldnt believe how fast they were. The ski my wife was on started right up every time and ran fine. The one I was on would crank but not start at the gas station.(wanted to make sure they start before unloading) after 10 min drive to the ramp it fires up. Sweet. after some fun we stop and shut em down and the one I'm on takes forever to start and did this all day. Sorry so long any advice/help would be great. Thanks D

What do *plugs look like? What is the compression? Do you have new BR8ES *plugs
gapped .021?

Mine did this too, and I had to adjust the low-speed jets to get them right. Too lean or too rich can do this. Too lean, and it won't start when cool. Too rich, and it won't start when warm (acts like it is choked).

I also have to adjust the low-speeds a couple times during the year if the water warms up a bunch or cools down a bunch.

I also ALWAYS carry a can of starting fluid, just in case I am out in the surf or ship channel and cannot get it started.

NEVER use starting fluid in a seadoo, it will take the lubrication right
off the cylinder walls and scour the piston skirts. Use a squirter with pre-mix gas.

While I agree... his problem is that he's flooded... so putting more fuel in will make it worse.


Anyway... on the ski that is hard to start... the needle valve is probably leaking down. Open up the carbs, and check to see if the valve arms are level with the carb body. Also, check the diaphragms for a red nipple. If it's any other color... go buy new OEM Mikuni diaphragms. Some of the aftermarket diaphragms are known to cause hard starting.

Would this cause it smoke and spit and sputter when it finally does kick off and start?
