1996 XP runs great sometimes. Start up the ski and it will idle great. Give it full throttle and it will take off and then will slowly bog down within a couple of seconds. Turn it off and start it back up and same thing. If I mess with the vts buttons it seems to surge every time I push it up or down. Every once in a while it will find a sweet spot and take off and run great. Lots of power good top speed. Runs perfect for at least 20 minutes. I checked the plugs after the hard ride and they look great. Turn it off and then were back to this. Bogging out crap. I am at my wits end.

Please help me.

I have the Same Craft with the Exact Same Problem man! You mess with the VTS Switch, up ~N~ Down and it hits for a moment and right back to the bogging... Turn it off... Fire her right back up and runs great for a moment, then right back to the bogging! And on the Water, it may run Great for 15- 20 minutes, then right back to the bogging, hit the VTS A FEW times and it will take back off for a bit again... This is Crazy and probably something simple.. We need to figure this out......

Wow so I'm not alone. Yeah I can't figure this thing out. I've been throughout the carbs and fuel system more times then I want to mention. We need to figure this out. It's gotta be electrical I checked the coil box today and it is spotless. Cleaned my grounds getting ready to open up the gray box in the front. What have you been through? I will let you know as soon as I find any info on this problem and I hope you do the same.

Good luck to the both of us.

Definately! I will do the same, I'm looking into the VTS Switch as this seems to have something to do with it, and the the whole housing..... I didn't think it was a fuel issue... I will get back soon hopefully! Thanks

ok bud I did alot of reading and research last night and found a potential problem. Alot of people have had their Rectifier doing simular strange things.

Have you had any experiance with this?

Also can I have a little background on your ski?

How long have you had it?

Was it running fine one weekend and then the next it was having this problem?

I bought my 96 XP in a package deal with a 96 GTX and a double Zieman trailer with the storage box and fuel rack for $1500.

Of course the guy said they ran fine but they were sitting for over 2 years. So before I bought them I checked the compression. The XP had 150 psi on both and the GTX had 145 on both. They both had a strong blue spark and so I bought them.

First thing I did was go throug the complete fuel systems. Rebuilt carbs althogh they were spotless with good diaphrams and gaskets. Set them to factory specs.

Cleaned off the little bit of green goo on the carb fittings and cleaned out the fuel selector petcocks. Cleaned the water seperator filters and put an inline clear fuel filter rigtht befor the carbs. Which are still clean today.

My 96 GTX runs great. Except for the wear ring in the jet is a little sloppy. Still moves out and goes about 40 mph.

The wierd thing is it only hits 5500 rpm at 40 mph with one person on it. Any thoughts?

Well thats the background on my skis.

Im going to disconnect the Red wire on the rectifier and see if it helps anything.

Hope to hear from you soon.

It may well be your rectifier. I have heard many stories of a ski doing weird things and it turned out to be the rectifier. I have a few 787 rectifiers for sale. you can PM me here and we can work something out if your interested.

I just bought a Matching pair of these that a couple had bought new! I guess it's been right about a month I had these. We got to ride em both b4 we bought them and all was good. The first time we took em out, they both ran great. The next time out is when mine started doing this but, just every now n then it would bog down & not for long so, me being a NOOB, I didn't pay much attention to it cuz it didn't last long. The next time out is when it was just bogging out alot for long periods of time and thats when I noticed when I hit the VTS button it would try to take off so, I would push it up n down and it would take off. I got it home and I figured the VTS Housing was full of water and, I was wrong.... I can start it right up, right now and it will sit & Idle fine and run great for just about a minute, then, the bogging begins... Sounds the same as yours.... Let me know how that goes tonight and hopefully you will have good news!.....:banghead:
Oh, Also, I tried disconnecting the VTS and it did the same thing....

POS Rectifier messing with me the whole time. I hope.

Ok bud I think I might have figured it out. Put an ohm meter on the battery today and read the voltage. 12.8 before I started it. Then I started her up and bam she went all the way to 15.5 volts on idle. Bumpped up the throttle a little and wow 16.5 volts. Let her idle agian and 15.5 then down to 0 then to 3 volts. This thing was jumping all over the place.

The Rectifier is bad. Now I know a bad rec will mess with the ignition on these 787's so I hope that was all it is.

Crossing my fingures on this. Ordering a new one tomorrow.

Ill keep you posted.

Cool! I really do appreciate ya! How much was the thing anyways? Thanks, Tim...

Well I looked around the Internet and called some local shops and the rectifiers were around $60 for an aftermarket and $70 for an OEM Seadoo.

Called Parker Yamaha they have the OEM for $57 plus 12 dollars shipping. I also needed a couple new fuel floats $10 so got it all shipped out for $89.

Bruester, you are the Man! He shipped me a Rectifier up here Warp Speed and now, The Seadoo is Running GREAT! Thanks Man! Great Price Too! Tim

:hurray:

I rode my 96 XP all day with the new rectifier and it ran like a Champ, Never cut out or bogged at all but, as the day went on I noticed it didn't have quite the top end it had early in the day so, when I pulled it up the ramp, I opened the drain & man, The water kept coming out & coming so, I don't know if that slowed it down or what cuz I also had quite alot of Oil coming outta one of the Power Valves as well.... But, all ~N~ all, it performed very well compared to Labor Day Weekend.........:willy_nilly:... Thanks to Bruester420 for the Rectifier!.........

Hey Tim glad everything worked out for you. Could you please leave me positive feedback on my profile page so others may see it as well.

Hey bud I’m glad its running better now. I’m still waiting on my rectifier from Parker Yamaha, I hope my problem is fixed like yours.

As for the water in the hull, is the drain plug o-ring still good? Could be a carbon ring problem as well.

As for the power valves (RAVE valves) making an oily mess on the engine it probably popped the rubber diaphragm off the valve or it could have ripped.

Hopefully its the PTO side (Rear) RAVE valve because its easier to take out. Just pop the black cap off. You should now see what the problem is. Take the two 5mm allen headed bolts out and carefully watching the gasket take the whole valve out. If the gasket is stuck to the motor then use a small screwdriver or a razor blade and pry it off, as it comes out with the valve.

Once you have the valve out, clean it all up. If the rubber bellow is ripped then you will need to by the rebuild kit.

If the bellow just popped off the top ring where the spring clamp is then simply take the spring off. These springs just have a small end that is screwed into the bigger end of the spring. What I did was unscrew it from itself and trimmed off about 5 windings from the big end. Then I pre tensioned the spring so it will screw back into itself. Twisting it the opposite way of the direction it screws into itself. That way you can screw it in all the way without it binding up.

Put it all back together and you should be good. Some people like to put a small zip tie on the bottom seal but mine was still tight so I left it alone.

Now if the MAG side (Front) RAVE valve is leaking then you need to take the black cap off then using a 10mm socket unscrew that top cap. Then you can take the two 5mm allen bolts out and remove the top housing leaving the actual valve in the block. Once again pay close attention to your gasket.

While everything is apart clean the valves up getting all the black carbon off and try to clean the slots in the jugs to ensure they will slide up and down without binding. Check for any side to side valve slop. The book says the limit is 1/4 inch. Also you will notice a small hole in the bottom side of the valve housing. Make sure it is not plugged up or blocked in anyway. While I had my valves out I looked down in the slots in the block (Jugs) with a flashlight and rotated the PTO by hand inspecting the pistons and cylinder walls. Making sure there were no deep gouges or broken rings. Make sure you take the spark plugs out as this will make it a lot easier.

I hope this helps and good luck to you buddy. Your almost there.

Thanks For the Great Reply Chris! I hope the New Rectifier Cures your Ride as well! I'm sure it will Bro....
