i just bought a 96 gtx and it wont offer up a beep at anytime. stays silent when i push the start/stop 5 times but i do get lights on on the gauges. no beep when i hook up the lanyard but i do get gauge lights.... not sure what this means. I do know that i cant get the ski to fire. she will crank over but the spark im getting is intermittent, by that i mean sometimes she will give spark and sometimes it wont. im beating my head against a wall right now from messin with it all day. im new to seadoo and can really use the help.

oh and i noticed that only one of the exhaust power valves had a spring under the black cap.... are both supposed to have one?

the huy i got it from said last time he had it out it would idle fine but one he accelerated it would gain speed then just shut off... but always restared after.

any toughts or ideas as to what my problem could be? thanks for your time!!

no electric, cuts off

Symtoms suggest the lugs are corroded internally on the two battery cables. You can buy new or cut them off and solder new lugs on and marine shrinkwrap them.

Several factors can cause a shut down. Wrong plugs (BR8ES gap .021) or
Exhaust leak in engine compartment asphyxiating gas air mixture. Magnito
failure from metal partical infiltration. Fuel routeting clog. Air leaking into the
cases. Just to name a few. Bill

Beeper is bad.
Check the compression. Every time it shut off, it may have been seizing.

Yup... the beeper is bad. Every Doo I've played with that was older than a 97 had a bad beeper.

Go to radio shack, and buy a beeper from them, cut the wires from your old beeper, and solder on the new one.

I don't remember the number on it, off the top of my head... but I just changed the one in my Si. I'll take a pic and post it later.

Here's the beeper. Radio Shack # 273-068

Just solder on your red wire to the positive, and your black to the "CONST" terminal on the back.

I have it on the pulse lead since this is a pre-MPEM seadoo.

As far as the other issues... you need to just go over everything. Open the electrical box... disconnect everything, clean all the contacts, and reassemble. Then go over the engine. If there are parts missing in the raves... and one is opening, and the other is closed... you could twist the crank, or burn a piston.

Sounds like the last guy who owned it did half-assed work.

Thank you Dr Honda that was very helpfull... I went and got the buzzer and sure enough it works again.

I also got her running today and discovered that threre is a crack in the outer water jacket for the exhaust and it fills the inside of the ski pretty quickly. its not such a problem about the crack ther than i have to take it off and clean off the putty someone stuck on it and weld it back up.

My concern is still with the fact that the guy i got if from said it would run strong for a few then shut off restart then do the same all over again. i did a compression check today and came up with a consistant 127 on both cylinders. anyone have any ideas for what i should do next?

Tig weld the crack.
Gas goes bad in three-four weeks, can just shut off, performance goes nill. Bill

Electrical noise from starter fragments in magnito can cause intermittant shut-offs.
These can be vacumned out, once you get magnito opened up.

That engine is on it's way out. 127 psi is just enough to make it run. I would pull the engine apart and look it over. You may get lucky, and only need to change the rings. Right now... the rings aren't sealing, and a few things are going on.

1) low compression makes less power
2) hot gasses are bypassing the rings, and heating the piston skirt. (bad)
3) those gases are also burning/pushing the oil from the cylinder walls. (could seize)
4) those gases are lightly corrosive, and are eating the crank bearings, and seals.

I hope you got it cheap because the guy was not honest.

Oh... and while you have the engine apart... have the leaks TIG'ed up.

Once that's all done... then you can tackle the electrical issues.

Thats the plan then. Im gonna head outside right now and start tearing her down. hopefully it will be like you said and i can get lucky with just new rings instead of a whole new top end.

where would be the best place to get parts for it online?

I think you will have to bore it out. Post pictures of the cylinder bores.

Chester

Cylinders look pretty clean and smooth. no gouging os abnormal wear. some slight surface rust that im sure i can hone out easily one cylinder does have some slight pitting.... only about a 1/4" sq. thinkin im the first one to open up this engine and the bore mic'd out at 81.995. the head is cherry and the rods and crank feel tight. cant seem to find any cheap rings online but have found some top end kits for about $200. any idea where the best place is to get the parts from?

How many hours are on the ski? The rust in the cylinders probably caused the low compression. If the pistons and rings are in good shape and the engine has low hrs. then I would just hone the cylinders, clean the pistons and rings and reassemble it with new gaskets and o rings. That would probably bring up the compression and then you could deal with the other issues. I normally don't give out "clean up and reassemble" advice but in your case the cylinders don't look like they have alot of hours on them, it's probably a fresh water ski and the rust is just from sitting without being ran.

Just a thought, DAWG

The cyls look good - but the red eye effect is funny, I always thought it was the sailors who had red eye, there is no low price piston rings, I was dooing a top end for my daughters friend at her house and stepped on a ring that fell out of the package when her dog bumped into me, for a minute we thought the package was incomplete till we spotted the pieces on the floor - just a one piston rings set was about 25bux with shipping - something we smile about on the holidays. You still need the rave valve spring/s and cleaning the carbs is always a good idea, spray the needle valve holes and also the fuel inlet screens.

nope... on a 96... the hr meter is in the MPEM, so you have to take it to a dealer to get the answer.
So the hour meter in the digital display doesn't mean squat? I have two 96's and when I put that batteries back in a few days ago they read the same hours as when pulled the batteries. (meaning no reset).
