96 gti water intake

On most skis it seems the water inlet for the motor comes from the pressure area in the jet pump. Why on a 96 gti is the water inlet above the jet pump? Does this seem right? I have seen pics of other 96 gti and it looks the same. My question is how does it get sufficient enough water to cool when you are riding it if this inlet is out of water or seems like it would be when you are up on plane.

It's not a "Water Pick-up"... it's a water feed. The pressure from the pump, pushes water through that hose. So... as long as the jet pump is spinning... you should have cooling water.

Ok but if the inlet is not in the jet pump but 2 inches above it through the hull how is the jet pump pushing water through it?

Its the same hose you hook the garden hose up to to run the ski out of water. I assume this is the water inlet for the motor. I guess im looking at the wrong hose for the inlet. I have a downloaded manual for the machine but in the cooling system diagram it shows a hose coming from the jet pump but mine like I said is above the jet pump.

Ok I got it figured out im thinking. You are right the hose is coming from the pump I was looking at the wrong one it has a clear sight glass on it so you can see the flow. The reason im looking at it is cause I have been having a issue with the temp buzzer going off and in looking to see if I have a plugged line. I got a new temp sensor also that im going to try today. Maybe that is the issue and if not then I must have a short somewhere. Thanks for the info this site is a valuable resource for PWC rookies like myself.

Dude, you need to look under your Seadoo! There's a big hole under it with a metal grate to keep out big stuff. This is where the water comes from to cool your engine and supply the water that shoots out the back to power your ski. If it partially clogged with weeds or whatever, this will cause your engine to overheat. You can usually just pull it free with the engine off even in the water. If there's anything wrapped around the drive shaft, like rope, you can take off the grate (10 mm bolts) and get it out. On dry land of course.

I too have a 96 GTI with the same temp buzzer going off issue, but yet can't find any clogs. I did notice it doesn't "pee" consistantly even when at say 1/2 throttle. My '96 SP shoots steady and powerful streams at all times when underway. I'm now wondering if the lack of steady stream from the GTI is normal (?):banghead:

Overtemp issue solved!

I got a new temp sensor and everything is good now. The only thing left to fix on my seadoo is the speedometer. So my 500$ machine has actually cost me around 700$ so not a bad deal. If I figure the speedo out I will post the results. Thank you for all your info and ideas!
