So i bought my 96 gti from a friend 3 years ago and out of the 6 times i have actually gotten to ride it i only had one good day on the water with it. It spent all of it's life at a freshwater lake. I've spent 95% of my time since buying it replacing parts and fixing this damn thing only to now have the engine seize while getting it started and running after a mere 2 mins. I'm sick of this! I'm also out of work now and can no longer afford to keep wasting money on something that sits on a trailer more than anything.
I have replaced within the last 2 years:
New mpem
New stator
new rectifier
speedo sensor
battery
More stuff i can't recall at this moment
and recently replaced all fuel line with black automotive fuel injection hose, drained and cleaned the fuel tank, Cleaned out the carbs with new filters as one was clogged.
also just replaced the starter and starter solenoid.
Got it running yesterday after it taking 20 mins with fresh gas along with spraying a bit in the carbs directly. finally l got it running constantly for 2 minutes when it shut off out of nowhere. Went to re start it and i got a click. tried to turn over by hand with plugs out and it is locked solid. I realized this was most likely and oiling problem as i heard a slight metal/whining noise while turning over/running. You see, When i first put the carbs on. I didn't notice at first that the cable coming off the carbs that connects to the oil pump housing under the carbs became disconnected. I reattached it after turning the motor over a bit the last time i tried starting it but the starter became weak so i had to wait for a new starter which i installed yesterday and boom, now its seized. I'm assuming the cable that was disconnected is a flow control valve for the oil injection as throttle increases? could that also be the cause of the seized engine as i believe thats why? I'm so sick of this thing that i may be listing it in the classifieds as is for parts or fix with trailer cause i cannot afford it anymore nor do i have any patience left... So feel free to make comments or offers for this friggin thing.
