I know that there are many threads covering the two, but nothing seems to give the exact answers.
What are the design and basic differences between the white and silver 951?
What is interchangeable and what is not?
If I was going to pick up a 97.5 GSXL that has the white 951, what can be done to make the white as good as the silver?
Upgrades?
Part swaps?
Modifications?
Do a complete motor swap?

Would a rebuilt white motor (from SBT for example) have the problems corrected that plagued the white motor?

I see alot of "run from a white 951" out there, but I don't see what can be done to make it better and more reliable.

DI verses Carbed.....

There is some big and small differences between the silver and white engine. The most notable is, the white engine is used for the DI (direct injected) type engine and will reflect that mostly in the head design. The silver engine is used in the naturally aspirated engines.

There was only one other difference I noticed, the cylinder head volume. The white engine had 51.4 cc's of head volume and the naturally aspirated has 51.8 cc's. That's only a difference of .4 cc's.

Displacement and compression ratio (6.1:1) were equal.

I stand corrected!....

You are absolutly right!......I did some back tracking after your post to double check my info and found exactly what you were talking about.

The only white motor that was produced was for the 1998 GTX limited. It does have a different compression ratio to the other two 951's at 6.0:1 verses the 6.1:1

My manuals didn't list this engine until 1998 but it's not to say that there wasn't versions of the new GPX limited out in late 97.

Thanks for the topic........I learned something new today.

Yes, it is considered a '97.5 GSX limited.
Many list it as a '98 though.
Only offered that half year from what I can find.
May have a chance to pick up one at a good deal.
Just wanting the info on how to make this trouble plagued motor better.

Yeah!.....

Yes, from all the manuals and cross references I can find, it was only made that one year. I know the compression ratio is .1 off of stroke but I didn't check things like the power output from the mag or the ignition type. If you got the bolt up mag etc....I think you should be able to match it up.

I wonder why they only made it that one year? I wonder if that change in stroke was the only reason?

What were the issues with the white engine, I was told by the person I baught my GSX from that it was a 97.5 production that was overhauled the fall of 2007

Thanks David N
