RESTO 95 XP800 Resto Thread

I’m

Soft Scrub with Bleach and a blue scotchbrite pad. And patience lol.

If your pad is already gummy before you try to clean it, there’s no saving it.
Is there a difference in scotchbrite pads according to colour? I’ve always used mothers back to black trim restorer after cleaning with soft scrub or Naptha

Yeah. White, gray, maroon and green in order of least aggressive to most aggressive. Blue is just what is sold in the grocery store, typically for pots and pans. It does a good job without being too aggressive.

Amazing what a $30 bar pad and a little elbow grease will get ya.

Does anyone have any sort of UV protectant they recommend to apply after cleaning?

Came out great but I paint mine for longevity. Once and done. :) I have one that is turning to "goo" I might be able to save it with some cleaning and paint. I'm deciding Yellow or Black paint. I did on in black but when it scratches you see the yellow. :D So, I may go yellow. That cloth cover isn't a bad option when the plastics are coming apart.

Nice! I was more so curious how this one would turn out since it looked pretty rough. I actually just threw a coat of plastic & rubber restorer on it and the thing turned out almost brand new. No sticky residue at all!

What kind of paint do you use? I have trouble getting paint to stick past a couple of years. When I do another one I think I am going to try SEM vinyl coat. I did a badly faded purple seat with it 2 years ago and it still looks great.

Stuff is plastic. I use automotive base clear mostly. I used to have acrylic laying around which I like because it is single stage but that means I have to stock double the materials. You can use Bulldog Adhesion promoter just a light coat to help the paint stick. Gotta be careful with those primer sealers because the paint doesn't stick to them. I'm finding more and more I have to sand. For metal I use "self etching primer" (just a light coat)
I paint all sorts of stuff, motorcycles, parts on my 50 year old airplane, race bike, tractors, lots of jet skis I've painted hoods. Base/Clear is dang near indestructible. Nothing looks nice or last longer than nice paint on a jet ski. Brings them alive. It puts an exclamation point on a good mechanical build. It's all personal preference and it if feels good go one.... do it.

Glad to hear the SEM vinyl coat is durable, I used it for stenciling on the seat a couple years ago, it’s held good so far as well

Where did you get that finger throttle? I’m looking into coverting mine.
Facebook. They’re not manufactured anymore so you’ll have to see what you can find in Facebook groups or on eBay. This is a GT Manufacturing throttle, but Coastal and Thumb Saver were knockoffs back in the day.

SEM says it works on plastic also. I used Bulldog on the last one I painted. It has started to fail after 1 year. A different bar pad that I have painted twice, I have actually used SEM over the paint and it is still good after 1 year, but it is not a fair test because it is on paint that is not holding very well. I have just been using rattle can paint.

I misread the post a bit. I didn't realize people paint seats. :D I use SEM on my airplane interior, not the seat material, but interior plastics and metal. It has lasted for 10 years. I only repainted parts because they got scratched up or damaged.

Paint seats… Stencil Sea-Doo on a new cover. Just like 0E.
On the topic of seats.. I can’t decide if I’m going to go with a Jettrim cover like I usually do, or stick with OEM yellow and stencil the logo on. Either way it’ll be a hump seat but I always go with black seats with a matching accent color. I really like the all yellow look, especially on the 800s, so I might go OEM on this one.. decisions, decisions.

Progress on the old ski has been slow between 60+ hour work weeks and framing/finishing the basement in our new house. I did finally start wet sanding, a few hours a weekend as I have the time.

Also managed to convince my wife I needed a TV in the garage. Surprisingly she was in full support 😂

Also have a bunch of stuff coming in the mail.. OEM graphics from Mike at PWC Graphics, Hydroturf mats, and some turf sheets for the rub rails and where the vent grilles used to be. Decided I’ll be going with an OEM yellow seat cover, so I need to get started on figuring out how I’m going to fix the foam and get that done too.

Does anyone here know if you can use a GT Manufacturing finger throttle with motocross style grips, or will the swing of the throttle be impeded by the thumb saver on the grip?

I like the look of the MX style better but will go with some lock-ons if there is conflict. I don’t have an extra grip laying around to mock it up with, figured I’d check before ordering them.

You can't use MX because of the inside rubber. You need MTB, I prefer the Odi Ruffian.

If anyone has done pink turf on their 95 or 96 XP, please feel free to post some pics. I haven’t personally seen any with pink turf but I think I’d like the look. I ordered pink mats and a pink sheet but they haven’t arrived yet. Looking for some inspiration in the meantime.
