Rotary valve gear lubrication question...

If the crank seals fails the engine is doomed anyway and hitting the bench for a full rebuild...

I can't see how the type of oil in the gear sump will make any difference or do more damage
If some oil makes its way past the inner seals in the crankshaft the engine will not be doomed, I have heard of people using these machines for many many years after a leak is realized, and that’s just leaks that have been realized, who knows how many have such a small leak that they are not noticeable.
If you were running ATF instead of 2 stroke oil, would trying to burn the ATF in the combustion chamber not damage the machine? Or would it simply mix with the injection oil and fuel and run as normal?

In as far as engine damage, I believe trace amounts of ATF mixing with the gas/oil mix would be of little concern..

Would it do more engine damage if a seal blew completely? I can't truthfully say..but it doesn't matter engine, rebuild time anyway. But I doubt it..just smoke like a beast and saturate the plugs until it shut down is my guess.

There is a beauty of this system I'm constructing. The reservoir bottle mounted inside the hull is a sealed, non-consumption lubrication system for the rotary gear.

If an internal leak exists the level in the bottle being only 200ml will show pretty obvious drop unlike drawing on a 1 gallon consumption oil tank of the original design.

You're right..does anyone really know if minor seal leakage is happening?

Further, the smell of burning of ATF is distinctly different and creates more smoke than 2stroke oil, either would be a secondary tip off that the internal seals are breaking down.

Any amount of oil going past those seals is bad long term..ATF or 2stroke oil!

So in that degree, this system is a better way to monitor the crank seal integrity during operation in the long term..

My working theory anyway! ;)
